Burrell Maricle aged 105, one of the last Confederate veterans on Louisiana pension rolls, was buried after dying at his son Mayo Maricle’s home in Pitkin. Born July 11, 1843, he served as a deacon for 75 years and lived in a log hut later used as his son’s home. he had seven children, 58 grandchildren, 100 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. The remaining survivors on pension rolls are Stephen Dupre, 104, of Alexandria, and William Townsend, 103, of Olla.

Walla Walla Wash May 27 Jake Bird a 48 year old Negro narrowly avoids execution as the ninth circuit court of appeals grants a 30 day stay for a hearing on appeal. Bird was convicted of the ax slayings of Mrs Bertha Kludt of Tacoma and her daughter on Oct 31 1947 and has repeatedly postponed his execution since 1948. He contends his confession was coerced and has pursued appeals through multiple courts including the US Supreme Court twice. Since his arrest Bird has admitted involvement or knowledge of more than two score killings across several states and on sentencing day he cursed those involved.
