Police in Lima declared 528 dead and 122 unidentified after tear gas and crowd crush at National Stadium ended a Peru Argentina preOlympic match. Rioters protesting a referee decision surged toward locked exits, triggering mass suffocation amid chaotic scenes on a 45,000 spectator day.
Rep. Melvin Laird said Barry Goldwater backed Eisenhower on many 1960 platform disputes. Laird recalled Taft in 1952 and Eisenhower in 1956 and 1960 as peacemakers. Rockefeller and Nixon pushed a 14 point plan, with few adopted. Morton as permanent chairman and Hatfield as temporary keynote were approved. In Donaldsonville Louisiana officials expect the Sunshine Bridge to open by early fall. The $21 million Mississippi River span now stands 300 feet above water after the last steel link was installed. Three to four weeks remain for decking spans and toll equipment will be added in August.
