Louisiana lawmakers push a constitutional amend ment to adopt a Mississippi style BAWI program allowing parishes and cities to issue bonds for site purchases to lure new industry. Existing firms could block rival bond elections. Elmer Conner said the plan targets small industries with 200 to 300 jobs, aiming to boost lagging areas. The measure would go to voters in November if both houses approve by a two thirds margin.
Mrs. J. B. Thornhill action chairman of the Monroe League of Women Voters promotes the permanent registration bill in the Louisiana legislature. The bill, introduced Wednesday as house bill 500, faces a public committee hearing May 28 at 5 p m with many league members expected to attend.
The Ouachita Parish High School held its Baccalaureate in the school gymnasium. Rev. Hugh F. Bradshaw preached the sermon on riders for the horses from Isaiah 36, urging faith over tyranny and urging prayer and repentance.
In Baton Rouge the Louisiana House unanimously approved Kennon’s tax cut and voting machine measures. Four bills aim to cut the gasoline tax, raise income tax exemptions, drop federal return copies, and place welfare and highways oversight on citizen boards. Welfare and highways bills await final pass after committee drafting.
Commissions as second lieutenants in the army and air force reserve will be awarded Tuesday to 178 ROTC cadets at Louisiana State University. Pres. Troy H. Middleton spoke before Col. Berg and Col. Johnson as ceremonies proceeded at 5 p.m. in the university theater with invocations and benediction.
The Northside Methodist Church organized at Neville High School with 110 charter members signed. Names for officers include Claude Gilliland and T. G. Guthrie. minister to be named at Shreveport conference with services aimed around mid June.
Neville High School held a baccalaureate at First Methodist Church with Rev. A M Serex delivering the sermon on The Mastery of Thought. He argued mental and spiritual forces surpass physical power and noted ideas shape reality even if their trace fades.
Col. Frederick S. Lee will present commissions as reserve second lieutenants to 30 seniors at Northeast State commencement tonight at 8 o'clock. The list includes Lt Col Thomas E. Bearden and Maj Rex E. Pensinger among others from Monroe Bastrop and Baton Rouge areas.
A 10441 ton tanker Michael and 1500 ton barge A J Dodge collided in heavy rain south of Wilmington sending both vessels into flames. Two men dead, six missing, one injured. Sjar Tellefsen survivor recounts escaping in a life preserver and swimming to safety.
Dr James W Reynolds professor of education at the University of Texas will give the graduation address tonight at 8 o'clock in Brown Auditorium on the Northeast State campus. Thirty six students will receive bachelor's degrees and twelve are candidates for graduation at the close of the ceremony.
The Monroe city council voted to purchase two Morningside Extension lots to erect a 500000 gallon water tank as part of the water system improvement plan. Lot 8 and Lot 9, Block 14, were bought from W R Kerry for 500 dollars.

In the British Commonwealth Division zone in Korea a jeep driver sped past the limit. A helicopter landed as Lt. Gen. John W. O'Daniel, 1st Corps commander, approached and issued a speeding ticket on the spot from beneath the helicopter blades.
