A. E. Montgomery was elected president of the Quachita Parish Police Jury by unanimous acclamation at a special meeting. He aims to unite the parish, tackle drainage and soil erosion, and advance parish-wide projects. W. D. Golson and Mrs. E. B. Hill were also chosen as vice president and secretary treasurer respectively. A liquor license for 1944 by Lucian Webb was approved. New members W. E. Hendricks J. H. Brown F. J. Bamburg and L. A. Fourmy were seated. Next meeting in June.
Fifteen Salt Lake City residents linked to the Fundamental Gift sect were called for sentencing after a paper trial. They were convicted of cohabiting with 33 women not their wives and face up to five years in prison. Each man wed between two and six women and defended their actions as following early Mormon doctrines. Authorities pursue similar paper trials for 34 more accused in a conspiracy to promote polygamy.

May 25 14 Harold Bell Wright author of The Winning of Barbara Worth The Shepherd of the Hills and The Calling of Dan Matthews died yesterday at age 72 from bronchial pneumonia in a La Jolla clinic The author once ranked as the nation s most read novelist with millions of copies sold across his many works.
Chinese field dispatches report Tatangizu, a village 29 miles northeast of Tengchung, fell after Chinese forces annihilated more than 1,000 encircled Japanese since the Burma road offensive began 15 days earlier. Other fronts show fighting intensifying in Loyang area and Honan counteroffensive stalled.
New York May 25. The first two Fifth Army men to shake hands at the junction with the Anzio beach head were Lt Francis Buckley of Philadelphia and Capt. Ben Zimmemer of Hanoluulu. CBS Italy broadcast: Buckley came from the south and Zimmemer greeted him with the remark where the hell do you think you are going. Buckley replied I came up here to make contact with the Anzio forces. Zimmemer said Well you made it.
Louisiana lawmakers introduced an administration backed bill to invest 10 million dollars of the general fund surplus in government bonds for two years, with the treasurer barred from disposing of them before June 30 1946 unless authorized by law. The measure targets the current and wartime revenues and would credit interest to the general fund. The plan, favoring a one percent sales tax, civil service reforms for mid sized cities, and port of New Orleans land acquisition, was debated in executive session with administration leaders and finance officers.
American armor rumbles along the Appian Way above Cisternai in a bold push toward Rome. Cpl. Robert G. Meinde of Sioux City Iowa pulled a German artillery observer from a road cave after hours hidden. Pvt. Charles Wooten of North Belmont NC captured seven prisoners in a half hour as 195 millimeter howitzers fell to U S forces. Lt. Douglas Stone notes the engaged action as explosions echo from newly emplaced German guns.
Los Angeles report says Ruth Evans 31, a film studio employee, died after possible overdose of aspirin or poison. County autopsy surgeon ordered chemical analysis of stomach contents after she was found on a residence porch Tuesday night. the autopsy showed no external injuries.
Police question Kenneth Long and Alex Simpson in connection with the stabbing death of Mrs. Jean Long at the Evan gelical Church where she served as a secretary. Det Insp Whitman said Long drove her to the church and returned to his hotel. Simpson said he met her at the church for a strictly platonic meeting and left. The investigation centers on motive and whereabouts Tuesday evening.
Austin May 25 Uninstructed Democratic electors could vote for either Roosevelt or Republican nominees if Chicago convention planks are not adopted. Secretary Sidney Latham studies which group to certify for the ballot as rival factions may take the issue to the Supreme Court.
Lt Beaufort G Swancutt faces possible execution after a sanity ruling at Camp Anza. A 12-member general court martial heard testimonies about the killings of Dorothy Douglas and Lourdine Livermore, and a Riverside police officer’s confrontation, as Swancutt pleaded innocent to four murder charges.
Mary Keys the last unmarried of Oklahoma’s famous quadruplet sisters will marry Sgt. Jack P. Anderson of Phe Texas on June 9 at Camp Hood Texas. The engagement was announced by her parents.
Allied forces merge the Anzio beachhead and main front near Terracina in a unified push toward Rome. The offensive drives 60 miles of German defenses in 14 days as the coast belt below Anzio falls under pressure and German reinforcements stream southward toward the capital.
Ernest Hemingway American writer sustained head injuries in a London car crash but a St George’s Hospital surgeon found no fracture and reported he is unhurt aside from a minor operation. He arrived in London as Collier's correspondent and his wife Martha Gellhorn was en route from the Mediterranean theater.
