J E B Doussom and Lambda Jones named leaders. debates include primary reform and tax/railway bills. Half of Section 10 of the platform critiques “recreant Democrats” and urges return to party discipline.
New Orleans May 24 1916 Monroe News-Star reports that the Carter Packet Company owned by Captains H M and BE G Carter will run the steamer S L Elam from New Orleans to Monroe on Wednesday May 31 at 4 p m. The service hinges on Monroe merchants providing real tonnage and support. A planned meeting of Monroe business leaders by the Chamber of Commerce failed to occur as only the president and secretary attended.

Washington May 25 The constitutionality of the emergency or war tax as it applies to bankers is to be reviewed by the Supreme Court on appeal from Judge Ferdinand 4 Geiger of Chicago. About 25 000 bankers and banking houses nationwide await the ruling after suits by Continental National Bank Continental Trust and Savings Bank and Hibernian Bank Chicago alleging the tax violates their capital stock. The tax, effective November 1 1914, required payment of 1 for each 1000 of capital used or employed.
During fiscal year Chicago banks paid the tax under protest and sought a refund, with suit filed against Revenue Collector Julius F. Smietanka. A Chicago federal court jury trial questioned the law's constitutionality. Similar cases are pending in New York and Philadelphia as lawyers seek a combined Supreme Court review.
