President Roosevelt announced a plan to train 50,000 men as pilots starting July 1 through the Civil Aeronautics Authority. Three months of basic flying will be provided with possible reserve service. Congress will be asked for a supplemental appropriation.
Thorp, whose leap from a post office window sparked the Lake Charles inquiry, is improving at a local hospital. He fled Miss Goodlett’s probation office before leaping, was restrained after a chase with a broom handle, and his condition was described as not serious. Governor Jones signaled further investigations in Lake Charles.
In Turin the Fascist university youth league gathered for sports contests and heard a message from Guido Pallotta promising a war of liberation to break chains, open Gibraltar and Suez, and claim the Mediterranean as their sea.

Jackson Mississippi May 24 Paul V McNutt federal security administrator warned that the Allies may not win the war due to unpreparedness and urged the United States to spring into action to get so well prepared for war that preparation may avert defeat He warned that Europe’s tragedy could extend to America and stressed strength as safety and security.
