Robert David Kercheval known as Jackpot, operator of the Smackover oil scheme, was sentenced to three years in a federal penitentiary and fined 600 after pleading guilty to using the mails fraudulently in oil field promotion. He was brought from Fort Smith after bondsmen released him following arrest in New York. Colonel Jimmie Cox’s 16 000 bond was forfeited for failing to appear for trial in the same case.
Monroe gas field operators charged with overpulling gas wells did not appear in district court. District Attorney David I. Garrett says warrants will arrest company officers individually. corporate pleas were denied by Judge Odom. Officers to be charged and bonded. further actions to test Louisiana conservation laws.
James B. Satterfield, who killed his brother in law R. H. Hart in 1921, faced execution in Atlanta with calm faith and a final prayer for mercy. In Gulfport Mississippi May 24 U S revenue officers and deputy sheriffs seized 115 cases of Scotch whiskey and 65 sacks of Canadian Club whiskey from a Wabash freight car believed loaded with oyster sheets from Biloxi. The car destined for Rosedale Kansas was found in bad order during repairs.
A two family house in Canton Mississippi burned in the early hours. Mrs Anginetta d Amateio and four Leclaire children died, two d Amateio children suffocated near a window. Vincent d Amateio and one child survived after rescue. The cause of the fire was not known.
Snowfall was reported across outlying Chicago sections this morning as temperatures dropped, bringing cooler weather to the area.
In Chicago on May 24 authorities concluded 13 year old Robert Franks was suffocated after kidnapping for ransom. Coroner Oscar Wolff said no external trauma and no poisons were found. A Chicago optician linked the unique spectacles to a woman owner, suggesting a nervous, sedentary individual with a long head.
New Orleans May 24 production and exports of southern pine timber for the first four months of 1924 surpassed any similar period since 1916. The increase in production was reported as notable, marking a new high for the era.
In Herrin and Belleville Illinois, a gun battle left Jack Shel cher dead and two other occupants captured after an attempted assassination of S Glenn Young a Ku Klux Klan liquor raider. They seized 140 quarts of Canadian Club valued at 1500 in the car she drove. Lyle H McBee of El Dorado was also arrested. Bonds set at 500 each. She claimed 400 paid for the whiskey and it was her first offense. They face transportation and possession charges. President Frank A. Scott of the Cotton States League sent orders from Wicks to all clubs to cut playing personnel to 12 including the manager and cap payrolls at 2000 monthly. Beginning Monday no club may list more than a dozen aging players, with strict enforcement league wide.
