A royal welcome greets the most powerful fleet assembled under the United States flag as engineers work day and night. The effort aims to defeat Germany through sustained naval hardware and strategic design.
The Atlantic Fleet serves as a great wartime workshop turning sailors into gun crews for merchant ships and destroyers. Five inch and other rifles are tested as crews train on loading machines and mock firings while brass, steel, and decks remain polished. Admirals and officers oversee speed drills as the push nears readiness for action against Germany.
London May 24 The first American army detachment arrived in England and was warmly welcomed by King George V Queen Mary and the Prince of Wales. Major Harry L Gilchrier leads 25 surgeons with nurses from the Fourth Base Hospital most from Cleveland and Vietnam. The detachment will train in British methods and join Allied forces in France.
Ouachita Red Cross chapter reports almost 700 members with a goal of 1000. A meeting at Monroe city hall Friday at 4 pm will discuss how men and women can aid the Red Cross in war relief efforts and learn from Shreveport chapter practices.
The Long Island Railroad runs a special instruction train this week led by a committee of women from the Island Food Reserve Battalion. The aim is to spark women to form clubs for canning preserving and storing home grown fruit vegetables and other food supplies.

Rome May 24 Italian war office reports the offensive enters a second stage after breaking Austro-Hungarian lines from Castagnavizza to the Adriatic. More than nine thousand prisoners taken, British batteries support the attack, Italian air lanes drop ten tons of bombs.
Major General Maurice said the Italian offensive moved to a second stage with new gains between Gorizia and the sea. The first day yielded more than three thousand prisoners and the Italians achieved all their objectives.
Prince Udine and an Italian mission visited Washington on May 24, greeted by cheering crowds and clerks as Secretary Lansing received the guests at the State War and Navy buildings.
