Tallulah La May 23 the levee district meeting endorsed scientific drainage but opposed the act’s powers and 50 cent per acre maximum urging delay until Red River Mississippi separation is achieved. Resolutions praised lawyers and engineers and urged sending copies to representatives.
President Taft signs order to parole certain inmates currently serving sentences in government prisons. The measure targets individuals awaiting release under clemency provisions and aims to reduce overcrowding.
A Washington dispatch says the new federal parole law, already passed by both houses, would let about 250 inmates in three federal penitentiaries be eligible for conditional pardon after serving one third of their terms. Led by Albert Godchaux and endorsed by Mayor Behrman, the plan seeks to revive winter racing with a 90 day meet and pari mutuel betting, including purchase of stock in several tracked properties. The move hinges on political backing from the New Orleans faction led by Boss Ewing.

New Orleans on May 23 William A Goertz assistant paymaster of the Street Railways Company was held under 7500 bond charged with embezzlement of 3000 from the company today. The accused, long employed and from a respectable family, refused to make a statement.
The Natatorium in Monroe, already popular for salt water bathing, will add about 150 rooms to the men’s bath house and plans to enlarge the 200 foot by 200 foot pool. Surge of visitors from surrounding towns expected. A L G railroad promotes sea bathing in its folders to draw travelers.
A prolonged hailstorm lasting about 25 minutes swept Hot Springs, Arkansas, cutting in from the north. It damaged unprotected horses, caused several runaways, and likely ruined young fruit and crops in the region.

Theo Sanders, about 30, jailed in Calcasieu Parish for murder after admitting he choked Rafe Gering during a dispute over a steer near De Quincey. Sanders says Gering drew a knife and attacked. no witnesses were found. Gering, known as the Calcasieu sheep king, died on the road. coroner noted lack of witnesses. Gering buried with Masonic honors.
Bluefields Nicaragua May 24 General Lara commanding Madriz troops set to press a decisive assault today. The fighting could determine the revolution within the next day or two as the clash intensifies around the port city.
London reports gossip that Col Roosevelt sought a practical peace between Germany and Britain during a Berlin visit. He aimed to persuade the Kaiser to agree to a broad settlement and then push reconciliation in London. The Kaiser refused to discuss Anglo German relations, leaving Roosevelt deeply disappointed. Queen Mother Alexandra greeted Roosevelt at Buckingham Palace after King Edward’s death, praising American sympathy.
