The U S Command reports 5686 enemy troops killed last week, raising total since Jan 1 1961 to 509 509. American deaths reach 453 with 2593 wounded as allied forces intensify offensives across Vietnam.
Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas Stafford Eugene Cernan and John Young plan a delicate separation to scout a site for Apollo 11. They will skim the moon at high speed and then rejoin the command ship 69 miles above the lunar surface. The crew aims for 13 minutes of radar ranging photos and observations before the return to Earth.

Charlie Brown Radio call name for the command module when the moon landing craft LEM is manned. LOS Loss of signal as when the moon is between earth and a spacecraft preventing electronic contact from the ground. Acquisition Re establishment of contact after LOS. Terminator Line between sunlight and darkness on moon or earth. Snoopy Radio call name for the LEM when it is manned. Apocynthion Point at which spacecraft in orbit is at its highest point from moon s surface. Pericynthion Point at which spacecraft is at its lowest orbital point over moon. Umbra Darkest part of a shadow or point on earth or moon farthest from sunlight. Undocking Process of separating the LEM from the command module. The command module remains in a high lunar orbit while the LEM is free to descend closer to the surface.
The 18th full session of the Paris talks yielded no movement on troop withdrawals or a political settlement. U S Ambassador Lodge said a basis exists for productive discussions on other issues while Viet Cong and North Vietnam pressed their 10 point plan. Both sides appeared to share a common approach on unification and the demilitarized zone.

The Louisiana House Appropriations Committee advanced Gov. McKeithen's 1.2 billion budget with heavy amendments. It restored funds for nine state colleges, added money for mental retardation programs, and cut or eliminated several agencies including the Sovereignty Commission and the Council to Develop French Language. Thor Heyerdahl sails the 15 ton reed boat Ra from Safi Morocco across the Atlantic seeking to prove ancient Egyptian contact with the Americas. The 30 foot steering oars replace a rudder while a crew, including John E. Desmond of Chicago Teachers Union, watches for wind and waves as the voyage aims for Mexico in months.
The Chicago Teachers Union halted negotiations with the board of education, leaving about 600000 students out of class as talks failed to yield a contract. Both sides reported progress after 14 hours but not enough to avert the first teachers strike in Chicago.
Cairo Radio said Egyptian planes shot down one of six Israeli jets after they violated Egyptian air space over the Red Sea in a dogfight. The broadcast cited military spokesmen and noted the battle followed another clash near the Suez Canal.
Space Center Houston reports Apollo 10 in lunar orbit on its second workday. At 11:25 a.m. Eastern, Stafford and Cernan transfer to the lunar module and Cernan begins entry. At 3:10 p.m. the LM undocks for its first solo lunar flight. By 3:35 p.m. the CM fires rockets to distance itself about 50 feet from the LM.
At 11:20 p.m. Young docks the command module with the lunar module as twelve latches secure the transfer. By 12:03 a.m. Stafford and Cernan begin transferring back to the command module. At 1:09 a.m. Friday the lunar module is jettisoned.
