Postmaster A. A. Shoman receives a letter from J. B. Bass of Birmingham proposing a survey for an air mail line from Birmingham to Monroe and Shreveport at no cost to the Post Office. Figures on projected daily traffic will be prepared by Shoman, Travis Oliver, and S. H. McClary for submission to Washington.
Irwin Miller McCormick a 10 year old of Heidelberg Jasper county was wounded by a stray bullet while at home. He and playmate Sam Jones of Barth Miss lacked any firearms and the bullet entered his left side and exited the right. He walked three blocks to his father’s drug store for help and was later taken to a Hattiesburg hospital for examination after his mother returned home.
Sam Green, fire department captain, found a 14 inch bullfrog with three legs during a frog hunt. The missing rear limb likely fell off early after a turtle bite, yet the frog moves with strong leaps and hunts effectively despite the handicap.
Lieutenant William R. Sweeley, Army flyer, refueled in Memphis during a dawn to dusk flight from Buffalo to Galveston. The route line near Monroe suggests possible sighting this afternoon as he continues toward Galveston, after leaving Louisville at 8:05 a.m. and Memphis at 11:10 a.m. central time.
Tony Canzoneri arrives in New Orleans to train for his first professional fight before home town fans. He meets Claudie Wilson of Birmingham next Monday night in a ten round decision bout.
A northbound mail plane on the M O route crashed in fog near Sandston Virginia early today killing pilot E J Morrissey 85 of Allora Ill. The aircraft from Richmond aimed for Byrd airport then for Washington and Philadelphia. Wreckage lay off the Seven Pines golf course as residents saw lights spiral down. Morrissey’s body was found beneath the wreckage amid debris as officials investigated a landing attempt in fog.
In Hamburg on May 22 phosgene gas, a deadly war poison, hung over the city killing 11 and injuring over 200. Hospitals held about 98 victims with others in Wilhelmsburg and Hamburg. Milk was requisitioned as an antidote as cattle and urban animals perished and forests and crops withered. Three hundred fifty families fled their homes and could return as authorities worked to end the danger.
The United States sent a note to China seeking the arrest and execution of the slayer of Dr. Walter F. Seymour, an American Presbyterian missionary. In New Orleans, Joseph Goldstein, 9, was found dead in a canal after being missing since Sunday. The House, without debate, sent the tax bill to conference. postmaster and rent allowances for fourth class posts were approved. In Birmingham, Miss Marton Turpie led the southern women's golf championship qualifier amid heavy rain.
Senator Norris C. Williamson warned Louisiana taxpayers that the current legislative session could grow more costly than past sessions unless administration policies change. He urged cutting salaries and eliminating unnecessary jobs, and said Governor Long exercises complete control of both houses with trusted committee majorities backing his program.
Carleton W. Sturtevant of New York appeared before the senate commerce committee to detail his civil engineering experience for the Mississippi river flood control board. Senators pressed his prior dredging work and neutrality pledge as the panel weighs his confirmation amid differing flood control plans.
Washington May 22. A five year research program will study why families with moderate means fail to obtain affordable medical care. The project is led by Dr Ray Lyman Wilbur and involves the American Medical Association and major insurers and funds from Carnegie and Russell Sage. The report notes total illness costs exceed 5 billion yearly while access remains uneven.

Baton Rouge May 22 Governor Long, sleeves rolled up, begins work at 9 am in his office on pressing duties including preparing his message to the legislature to be read in person at a joint session Wednesday morning. Visitors crowd the governor’s office.
County agent FE Strahan surveyed the damage from Sunday morning hail in the northern parish area. Affected land spans about four miles by two, mainly Southern Carbon company property, with 400 to 500 acres of crops destroyed requiring replant. Snakes, frogs, and poultry losses were also reported.
In Baton Rouge the upper house began its May session with twenty two bills introduced including a repeal of the tobacco tax. Senators Dore and Boone promoted the measure while Governor Long and Superintendent Harris urged revenue use for public works. Other bills addressed land certificate dating and conservation authority over stocking waterways with fish.
Two Army amphibian planes under Major General James E. Fechet returning from Greenly Island to assist in the trans Atlantic attempt were forced down in Stonington harbor by heavy fog. They departed Deer Island, N B, earlier this forenoon.
W H Bennett of East Feliciana presents a joint resolution to Louisiana lawmakers proposing a 78.5 million bond issue over six years funded by federal aid and existing revenues. The plan targets graveling and surfacing 1 500 miles of state highways with no tax increase, using a pay as you go approach backed by license taxes.
