Mother Convicted In Torture Slaying

An Indianapolis mother of seven was found guilty of first degree murder in the torture slaying of Syhvata Marie Likens. Four teens, including two of her children, were convicted of related charges as jurors delivered lengthy verdicts after a 23 day trial.

Senate Approves Judges Pay Bill in Louisiana

Baton Rouge AP report says the Louisiana Senate approved bills to raise pay for state judges. Sen. Adrian Duplantier touted backing from judge and lawyer groups as the chamber passed 32-5 for Supreme Court and Court of Appeals judges and 37-0 for district judges. The measures advance to the House for concurrence.

Solons Meet On District Sales Proposal

Rep. Lantz Womack of Franklin parish and Rep. Benny Christian led Fifth District lawmakers in discussing a district wide school board sales tax to fund education. The plan would allow a popular vote for a one cent tax, distribute proceeds by parish population, fund teacher and driver salaries, set a $1.25 minimum for other staff, and use excess for capital, maintenance, and expenses. The district would include 14 parishes and require a statewide vote to establish a tax district, with revenues allocated per parish after approval.

Retired U S Senator Green Dies at 98 in Rhode Island

Theodore Francis Green, 98, longtime Rhode Island Democrat, former governor and senator, died at his home after a long illness. He served 23 years in the U S Senate, chaired the Foreign Relations Committee, and was a leading supporter of the New Deal and Fair Deal. He retired due to failing sight and hearing.

Louisiana Senate Votes To Ratify U S Amendment

The Louisiana Senate reversed itself voting 21 to 16 to pass a resolution to ratify a U S constitutional amendment on presidential succession when the president is disabled. Tornadoes Touch Down North of Crowley Louisiana
