Washington May 19 Hugh S Johnson industrialist and soldier who helped mobilize men and machines in the World War crisis was viewed as President Roosevelt's pick to lead the nation's fight against unemployment. White House aides signaled the possibility.

The quick 15 to 20 minute test reveals causes of hard starting poor performance excess fuel and oil use and promises greater economy and power. The offer ends Saturday.
Chemists convert hulls of buckwheat rice and other grains into activated charcoal to filter seasonal odors and tastes from drinking water. The process, developed by Hackensack Water Co, uses ground charcoal with huge surface area to trap microscopic agents. Dr. P Burke Jacobs of the U S agricultural experiment station at Ames Iowa calls farm-waste fillers a promising field for expanding agricultural opportunity.
Gray Summit Missouri May 19 The Missouri Botanical Garden reports a 1200 acre arboretum built from a field collection over eight years. It now hosts more than 1000 tree and shrub species native to the region and about 200 evergreen kinds with extensive varieties from the orient.
The Happy Kitchen cooking school sponsored by the Morning World and News-Star, with Natural Gas, closed a three day session with a grand finale at the Paramount theater. Mayor Arnold Bernstein praised the program as a community asset as awards were given to numerous attendees at both afternoon and night sessions.
