Scientists undecided whether a comet visitor cleared Earth’s vicinity. Measurements and observations leave open whether the object passed by safely or skimmed past, prompting ongoing analysis by space agencies.
Washington May 19 observers offer three explanations for Halley’s comet tail behavior while the earth’s passage through the tail remains uncertain. Professors Hall Mitchell Frost Barnard weigh theories as tail visibility extends from 10:38 Wednesday night to 3:00 this morning.
Letters have been sent to every manager in the National and American Leagues seeking to train a team in Monroe next spring. Secretary Anderson leads a league-backed push, promising two big league training grounds including two baseball diamonds, the grandstand for 3000, and enhanced hotel facilities by spring. The city also offers a salt water natatorium and ample dressing rooms as part of the package.
Special to News-Star Baton Rouge May 19 Resolutions in both chambers backed a Washington trip for the New Orleans Panama Canal Exposition mission. The General Assembly adjourns Tuesday to meet again Monday noon, with governor and other officers joining a special train to Washington. Uncertainty remains over timing of the trip.
Gov. Sanders backs continued legislative examination of Criminal and Civil Code Commission reports. A conference with House and Senate committees, lawyers, and officials agreed to keep the commissions advisory and unpaid, with final action postponed to the next or a special session.
Mayor Behrman, after a two day Washington swing, returns home convinced New Orleans will host the 1915Panama Exposition. He cites Champ Clark's pledge and broad GOP support, including Representative William H. Stafford of Wisconsin, as key factors in securing backing.
The Alabama State Democratic convention endorsed local option and liberal mining laws after critics urged purging statutes that invade trial by jury rights. Governor-elect Emmett O Neal pledged to remove broad prohibitions while increasing mine inspections and penalties to protect miners and support orphans of the dead.
Two powder blasts at the rural guards barracks in Piner del Rio Havana on May 19 killed about a hundred and wounded many more. A masonry deluge and debris covered the city as relief trains and surgeons rushed to the scene. The blast occurred during removal of powder from the barracks to the Havana magazine. Many bodies were found up to a mile away.
Prize fighter Battling Nelson visited Speaker Cannon at the Capitol and praised his fitness. The pair discussed athletics as Nelson examined Cannon’s frame and joked about his boxing potential. The encounter drew a friendly, lighthearted exchange before continued coverage on page 4.
A Louisiana legislative caucus discussed a plan to advance a Tennessee liquor ban within three miles of high schools, excluding New Orleans. Anti saloon and prohibition factions join to seek harmony for Panama Exposition, with implied senate and governor tension over advancing anti saloon laws.
The two groups named Salo Lamb and Prohibition Lion joined forces to oppose a segregation move, rallying supporters and seeking to influence public opinion and policy. They highlighted civil rights concerns and urged authorities to reject mandatory segregation measures.
A mistaken shout of The lion's loose sent a packed crowd of women and children into a panic outside a large circus in New York. Seven children were badly crushed or cut, a man fainted, a woman injured, and a girl suffered a broken jaw as babies were trampled and carts overturned. A frightened mounted police horse bolted, sparking the scare.
