Miss Marianna Johnson will retire as business manager with a noon Friday party at the Monroe City School Board Central Office. Meanwhile, crews demolishing the old sidewalk outside the Monroe Chamber of Commerce disrupt work for staff and visitors, but new walkways will connect to a downtown decor project. Chamber manager Robert F Bealle remains focused on the chamber's Program of Work during construction.

Richard A. Tonry resigned from Con after fraud allegations in his primary race and pleaded innocent to charges of accepting illegal campaign contributions and obstructing federal investigators. J Wayne Mumphrey, his former aide, also pled innocent to conspiracy obstruction of justice and making false statements to a grand jury.
President Carter says the Soviet SS18 ICBM has eight to 12 warheads and tremendous explosive capacity. He notes U S and Soviet forces, underscores upcoming SALT talks with Vance and Gromyko, and mentions plans for health insurance reform.
The report from the Clerk of the House details Louisiana’s delegation spending half a year covering staff salaries and travel. Lindy Boggs led in staff costs with 125,693 for six months, followed by Henson Moore 116,669 and John Breaux 109,477.
Monroe and West Monroe police chiefs question how Ouachita Parish Sheriff obtained a 10 304 grant for radio scramblers after being told funds were unavailable. The request bypassed local approval and received Clearinghouse Review Board support.
Monroe City School System teachers will not be required to makeup Thursday's work as Thursday is a paid state holiday for public school employees. Some will still rally in Baton Rouge for teacher pay raises, with about 470 to 500 staffers planning to travel on four to five buses and car pools.
The market extended the three day rally with the noon Dow Jones at 939.79 after an 11 point gain over the period. Advancers outpaced decliners by more than two to one on NYSE issues as investors responded to President Carter's remarks on ending double taxation of dividends. McDonald's led with a rise to 42 percent on heavy volume of 175,500 shares traded.
