Chief Justice Warren E. Burger criticized a small group of unruly lawyers and urged stricter professional manners and civility in the legal system. He called for discipline within courts or the profession, warning that ill-mannered lawyers threaten justice and liberty. The remarks were made at an American Law Institute session.
Former Vice President Aly Sabry and six ministers among others ousted last week were moved to jail at dawn. The plot involved Sabry as figurehead and leadership of the Arab Socialist Union, with plans to topple Sadat and trigger army support. At least 110 arrests were reported, with some later released.
In CATINA Sicily residents of Sant Alfio pray at the edge of a lava river from Mt Etna. The 43 day eruption nears the village as locals led by Mayor Salvatore Cuzzubbo and the parish priest moved toward the burning stream 300 yards wide and 20 feet deep.

At a Washington hearing the National Commission on Marijuana and Dangerous Drugs heard that marijuana is likely dangerous yet should be legalized. Stanford professor John Kaplan argued the drug may be risky but research since 1894 hasn’t defined its danger, while two doctors cited a study of 38 psychiatric patients showing distortion of perception and impaired judgment from marijuana. Other experts challenged the findings, noting possible similar effects from alcohol and questioning applicability beyond a small, selected group.
Discovery of a five foot alligator Sunday in a vacant residence in West Monroe recalls a similar 1970 incident. A Boa constrictor was rumored loose in the Twin Cities area on May 11, 1970. The National Weather Service reported the highest temperature excluding Hawaii and Alaska as 102 degrees in Laredo Texas on Monday. Overnight low temperatures reached 20 degrees at Winnemucca and Ely Nevada with cooler conditions expected elsewhere.
A committee sent reapportionment bills to the Senate to skirt non-budgetary rules but the Senate voted 20 to 17 to send them back to committee. Sen Jamar Adcock urged returning the bills as they are nonfiscal and require a three fourths vote, while senators argued constitutional timing and equal dignity of provisions.
The Louisiana Loan & Thrift trial of Attorney General Jack Gremillion and two others resumed deliberations in New Orleans after delays caused by juror illness and requests for instruction clarifications. A juror suffered nervousness, a nurse described the condition, and defense lawyers discussed the possibility of a mistrial amid the ongoing six week trial.
NEW YORK AP The stock market moved up slightly as investors bought bargains from a prior session. The 1 PM Dow Jones 30 rose 0.71 to 922.01 while the NYSE index of about 1300 common stocks gained two points amid more decliners than advancers. A rail strike settlement prospects and Senate Labor Committee action fueled optimism.

Rep. Jack Edwards says President Nixon will visit Birmingham and Mobile next Tuesday. He will travel from Key Biscayne, Florida, to Mobile for ceremonies launching the Tennessee Tombigbee waterway and then attend a revenue sharing program in Birmingham before returning to Washington.
