Ouachita Delegates Aid State Home Demonstration Meet

Four Ouachita parish representatives participated in the two day state Home Demonstration Council meeting in Baton Rouge. Bankers Honor Farm Club Youths From 14 Parishes

The Louisiana Bankers Association honored 4-H and FFA members from 14 northeast parishes at the St Joseph Experiment Station for their club work in poultry corn beef cattle and more. Johnnie Sturgeon Concordia Parish 4-H was named Concordia’s representative and attended with county agent Joe Milby and Concordia Bank and Trust officials. The 5th annual Bankers Farm Clinic featured a station tour on crops and pasture management followed by a barbecue and a recognition bouquet.

FFA Forestry Demonstration Conducted in Enterprise Louisiana

The Enterprise Louisiana FFA chapter held a forestry conservation demonstration during a regional field trip led by teacher Alden Creek and district forester N V Hawkins of Jena. Guests included forest rangers and numerous school and parish officials, followed by a barbecue.

Replanting Urgent on Louisiana Cotton Belts as Borers Hit

Entomologist A. L. Dugas warns the Louisiana sugar cane and cotton areas face the heaviest cane borer infestation since 1925 1926. He cites mild winters and wide plantings of vulnerable cane and calls for urgent grower preparations. Waller estimates at least 20 percent of cotton will need replanting due to rain and cold with potential yields up to a bale per acre if practices are followed.

Dem Club Demonstrates Lamp Making Across May

Ferriday and nearby Mississippi residents attend home demonstration club meetings in May to learn lamp making from Cypress wood to repurposed containers. Miss Inez Calloway coordinates sessions with two all day events and expert guidance from Miss Dorothy Stocks and Bill Burris of Louisiana Power and Light. Participants need not be members and may call Vidalia courthouse for equipment tips ahead of May 21 Ferriday event at the American Legion Hall and May 22 at Acme store.

Bright Outlook for Soybean Growers in 1952

T H Milliken of the L S A extension told Ouachita Parish Negro farmers that strong demand for oil producing soybeans arises from a crop shortage in 1952. He urged interplanting soybeans with corn where land is limited and noted grass as an economical crop, stressing fertilized pasture boosts cattle grazing. attendees included county agents and local residents.

New State Yam Earlyport Named at Louisiana Meet

Louisiana researchers unveil the Earlyport yam, the latest member of the state yam family. First developed in 1945 as L-240, it was officially named at the ninth annual Louisiana Sweet Potato Association meeting held in Church Point in March.

Ouachita Parish Women Learn Tea Service Use at West Monroe Meeting

West Monroe hosts a parish Home Demonstration council session where farm women receive tea service handling tips. Demonstrators include Mrs. H. H. Roberts, Mrs. W. O. Northcutt, Mrs. C. D. Henderson, and Miss Irene McQueen. Henderson selected to represent the parish at the national Home Demonstration council in Boston from August 21 to September 7.

Concordia Stock Raisers Plan Disease Fight in Parish

Concordia parish cattlemen are offered four Bangs disease plans under a state program. Plans range from test and immediate slaughter of reactors to vaccination only, with options to identify reactors and vaccinate calves. Joe Milby urges interested producers to contact him to schedule testing or vaccination with a local veterinarian.

Ouachita 4-Hers Grid for Tractor Plowing Tests Here

About 46 Ouachita parish youths enrolled for a tractor plowing contest in Monroe on Saturday May 23 set 1 009 yards west of Highways 89 and 163 intersection. The event stresses safe driving and machine maintenance with sponsors providing tractors and implements. Winners advance to a junior state short course at LSU Baton Rouge and compete with peers from 63 parishes. Judges to be named soon.

Sicily Island Tops In Field Program

Sicily Island and Enterprise High School students swept parish field day events at Sicily Island High School on May 18. Senior boys and girls trophies and sweepstakes went to Sicily Island, while elementary trophies and sweepstakes went to Enterprise.
