Omeg Tax on Oleo Urged by Milk Groups in Senate Debate
In Washington May 18 a leading milk producers group urged Congress to keep some taxes on margarine while repealing import duties on foreign oleo. Secretary Holman testified that full repeal would let oleo firms cloak product as butter and face no real competition. John Brandt, president of the milk producers' group, warned the repeal would harm established markets and accused oleo makers of misleading propaganda. He said uncolored oleo would vanish from markets, replaced by the yellow variety if rights to color margarine are won.
