Russian forces reportedly recaptured territory and regained control of a mechanical asset, signaling a strategic reversal on the battlefield. Reports name key units and locations but lack precise dates.
Petrograd announces a major Russian push in Bukowina reclaiming much of the region, citing a 90 mile front breakthrough and 20 000 prisoners. The report notes further retreat in Poland and five miles advance by Allies at Gallipoli. Germany may respond to the American note Thursday.
Washington reports Ambassador Gerard at Berlin has not indicated when a reply to the American note will come. Mr. Bryan said no significant information has been received from him.
The Ruston Leader reports workmen freed a jammed pipe in the Ruston Oil Fuel Co. well after hours of effort on Saturday. Once extracted the pipe revealed a strong gas flow, with Mr. Gill optimistic the supply will sustain Ruston.
The well drilled to about 2800 feet by Mr Champion left a pipe in the hole overnight. The pipe could not be moved the next morning and the operation was abandoned. Mr R M Gill later secured another rig and, with Me Boring and others, successfully removed most of the pipe and continued work.
The cotton compress owned by M. A. Joy of Terrell Texas burned today in Camden. Value set at $20 000 with about 20 box cars on nearby tracks destroyed. Origin of fire unknown. The present structure stood after a prior blaze ten years ago and carried no insurance.
Captain Wood of the Etonian reports the Narragansett was torpedoed while aiding the Lusitania, but the torpedo missed. He saw two submarines maneuvering near his steamer and credited rapid speed for the escape.
Baton Rouge Louisiana May 17 The Louisiana State University chapter of Sienna Delta Chi aims to land the 1915 Louisiana Press Association convention in Baton Rouge A fraternity meeting on Tuesday plans a campaign with help from Mayor Grouchy and the Chamber of Commerce The Press Association will meet at Monroe June 8 10 and an invitation to Baton Rouge will be extended then
Passengers aboard the Cunarder Transylvania report sighting a German submarine as the liner neared Glasgow from Grenock. The captain zigzagged to avoid danger, boats were swung out, and some passengers claimed a torpedo was fired but missed. others doubt the attack.

The Chamber of Commerce met to plan Louisiana Press Associations events in Monroe on June Sth. J M Cobb presided and announced Finance West Monroe and Entertainment and Automobiles committees with members including R Downes Jr J M Cobb and J W Smith. The finance group will finish their tasks this week and report Monday night to finalize entertainment arrangements for the visiting newspaper delegation.
The massive naval fleet in the Hudson completed a final review by the President as it moved from the anchorage to sea. Each ship fired a twenty one gun salute while tens of thousands gathered to watch the five mile procession past the Mayflower.
The new city council held its first regular meeting with long debate over water and light rate cuts and a proposed 12 12 cent street car fare for school children to start September 1. The body discussed hiring an efficiency expert for utilities and sewerage plans, with several price proposals presented and referrals made to committees.

Cabinet changes discussed though Commons has not addressed the issue. Kitchener in Commons urged allied gas protection measures and a demand for 300000 more men to secure munition supply and stability.
El Paso reports Antonio Villa died of wounds from a brawl in Chihuahua City. The death is noted as having no political significance.
Shreveport Louisiana May 18 The annual grand lodge convention of the Knights of Pythias grand domain of Louisiana opened with about 300 delegates including lady associates. W A Mabry presided as grand chancellor and Judge J C Pugh welcomed the visitors. Monroe was chosen as the 1915 convention city with 1916 slated for New Iberia Morgan City and Plaquemine as applicants.
Mr F T Horner of the Department of Labor is here to review six naturalization applications. The hearing before Judge Dawkins will be in the district court room tomorrow morning at o clock. Applicants include natives of Russia Holland Syria and Italy.
A Greek American restaurant employee assaulted a Black cook during an early morning disturbance on the business street. The Black cook fled the premises after trouble inside the restaurant.
Appletown Wisconsin May 18 one of the heaviest snows of the season blankets the region. The rain and cold threaten crops but may save others. The apple crop appears ruined by the freeze.
