Fire of undetermined origin swept the Benoit Spencer Manufacturing plant in Alexandria causing about 40000 dollars in damage. The wood working plant dry sheds planing mill and about 500000 feet of lumber and four freight cars were destroyed. The blaze was found shortly after noon triggering a general alarm.
In Grant parish two miles above Colfax on the Rocky Bayou highway a cave-in during bridge construction buried five men. They were excavated and saved. one man spent two hours and twenty minutes buried. Names: Wheeler Smith, E C Granger, Newt Lorman, Smith Goins, and Stafford Conway.
An early report notes a fire at a sawmill in the late industrial section of Alexandria, described as the town’s area of earlier plant activity. Details continue on page eight.

Lowell Dutton, 23, of Bellflower Missouri fatally slugged his wife Nelle Dutton 21 and attacked her mother Mrs Frank Campbell with an iron pipe. He then leaped from the St Charles vehicular bridge into the Missouri River dying by his own act. Both women suffered fractured skulls.
Judge Percy Sandel sentenced four defendants in district court this morning to penitentiary terms and imposed a 12 month jail term on a fifth. J D Barksdale, 60, white, received one year for lying in wait with a rifle to kill Mrs Ida Scott. The defendant, who called himself a river man, has lived in Mississippi most of his life.
State Senator Thomas B. Love of Dallas won the right to appear on the Democratic primary ballot for governor after the Texas Supreme Court ordered the state party to place him on the ticket. The court also reversed lower courts and barred enforcement of resolutions that barred candidates who did not support the 1928 Democratic nominee Alfred E. Smith.
Arkansas will again enter the market on June 18 with a new issue of 18 million dollars in highway bonds due 1935 to 1964. This is the third sale attempt this year after earlier bids failed amid unsettled markets.
Governor Dan Moody returned to Austin from Amarillo and firmly denied any oil company contribution to his campaign fund. He said no such support occurred and referenced a telegram on the topic from Rev. J Frank Norris of Fort Worth as part of the inquiry.

Dearborn Glendale Orlando Amarillo Greensboro High Point Long Beach San Angelo Santa Monica Durham Jackson Houston Monroe lead the list with rapid growth. The Long Beach 1920 rise survives into 1950, while 1920 leaders Hamtramck Village Highland Park posted huge prior increases.
Northeast Louisiana faced severe weather as an electrical storm uprooted trees and damaged homes and cars in Monroe and West Monroe. The Ouachita River surged 2.9 feet in 24 hours, rainfall reached 5.3 inches in 48 hours, and power and telephone lines were knocked out. one man was killed by lightning near Claiborne Parish.
Reports describe violence against Black men in multiple towns. In Oakdale Tennessee a suspected killer named Mobile survived seven bullets from a posse after stabbing a railway agent. In Honey Grove Texas a mob killed Sam Johnson after he fatally shot E F Fortenberry, then desecrated his body by dragging it from an automobile.
The Citizens Bank of Newton did not open its doors on Saturday. The Mississippi banking department, led by Superintendent J S Love, took charge of the bank’s affairs for liquidation. The bank, capitalized at 25000, held deposits around 475000 with loans near 300000 and a surplus about 15000.
Gant and W Kilbourne named delegates from Henry Allen post Confederate veterans to attend the annual encampment at Biloxi Mississippi next month. Alternates are W A Platt and W T Frantom. City Monroe and Ouachita parish police jury appropriated funds to cover travel expenses. Attendees at the meeting included W H Awl post commander W A Platt Joe Pierson C M Goodwin I Gant W T Frantom and W Kilbourne.
Harold Brewster an army private denied previous statements that he killed Mary Baker government clerk. He was held for questioning after associates said he knew something about the mystery. Investigators may probe his sanity as details remain tangled. Miss Baker daughter of a minister, was shot near Arlington National Cemetery on April 11.
A monkey escaped its owner and chased 5 year old Orvilla Correle for a block in New Orleans. The animal bit her on the leg and hand before bystanders and a policeman intervened. John Maser, a city employee, helped restrain the animal and the girl was taken to Charity hospital for treatment.
New Orleans May 17 Miss Edwina Wenz of Nashville secretary to Dr. Austin Crouch and to the Southern Baptist executive committee was bruised when struck by an automobile while boarding a street car to a convention session. Police called the accident unavoidable. She received treatment at Baptist hospital.
Churchill Downs hosts 15 horses for the Kentucky Derby as light rain dampens the track. Gallant Fox heads betting as the likely even money favorite with Sande aboard, alongside Alcibiades Uncle Luther Dick O’Hara and Longus among the early mutuel entries. Busy was withdrawn earlier.

A hot afternoon gave way to a last minute storm brewing over the Downs, menacing the smooth broad ribbon of track where the derby was to be run at 5 o'clock central time. Spectators hoped rain would not disrupt the event.
A Pontchatoula led coalition in Hammond aims to dismantle a bootlegging political group after Turner was caught with ten gallons of liquor. Turner, from the Pontchatoula outskirts, faced a $700 fine. alleged Turner confederates aided a jail break and the suspect family fled. The league vows to rid Ponchatoula of the bootlegging operation tied to local politics.

Claude E Fernandez of Centerville was named president of the student body for next year and P Brown Baker football star was elected president of the LSU athletic association. Multiple candidates will challenge them in the next election set for Tuesday.
Six people are killed in a dynamite explosion at a rock quarry near Union West Virginia. Two workmen Paul Shires Oscar Johnson and Jack Mills were in a smith shop where the blast occurred. Three children of Mrs Bella Wiseman and a water boy from Salt Sulphur Springs also died or perished.
In Rio Janeiro on May 17 fears for the safety of 36 crew members aboard the Brazilian freighter Icaraby grew after radio advices indicated the vessel had been abandoned. An SOS reported the ship near the Port of Rio Grande do Sul, followed by a second message stating the crew was abandoning ship.
John W. Brady, former appellate court judge, was sentenced to three years in prison by a district court jury in Dallas for the murder of Miss Lehlia Highsmith, an Austin stenographer, on November 9. The defense announced an immediate appeal.
Nine teen planes of the third attack group from Fort Crockett Galveston Texas took off for Havana Cuba to take part in an aerial exhibition next week. Under Major Davenport Johnson the squadron will fly via New Orleans Jacksonville and Miami reaching Havana Sunday. Nine planes from the thirteenth squadron were expected to join in Miami.
Captain J A McLean First Mate Robert Martine and a sailor were lost when the schooner Azua sank off the Jersey coast at 12 30 a m Thursday after being rammed by the steamer City of Atlanta, officers reported on arrival.
