Mariners Rescued After Russian Barkentine Goes Down
From Port Simon to New York the Carl Schurz brought nine mariners and three officers of the Heinrich Emma who were abandoned at sea after a March 29 sinking off Cape Hatteras. The crew clung to rigging for three days, survived on scarce meat cans, and were plucked from the storm by the United Fruit steamer San Jose.
