McNamara Calls for Expanded U S Role in South Vietnam

Secretary of Defense McNamara said the United States must widen its commitments in South Vietnam in response to a sharp rise in terror attacks by Communist guerrillas. He urged more military and economic aid, added training missions, and a substantial increase in regular and paramilitary troops and Vietnamese pilots. Tannery Blast Kills 4 Men Injures Several in Peabody

Four men died and a fifth was missing after an explosion and fire destroyed a six story tannery in Peabody Massachusetts. The blast occurred at 10 15 a m on the ground floor near flammable liquids as workers and a contractor's crew were present. The fire rapidly engulfed the building and the cause is under investigation with two of the contractor's employees missing.
