A son and daughter-in-law were away visiting.
Army officials conducted the annual federal inspection of the ROTC unit at Northeast Junior College led by Major Joseph A. Murphy. Cadet Maj. Dan M. Trimble commanded the parade with college band music by Francis H. Burke as the drill team performed on Brown Stadium drill field.
State income tax returns must be filed in the state department of revenue office at 138 South Grand Street before noon Saturday or mailed before midnight Saturday May 15. J M Hawkins manager says the office hours are 8 a m to 5 p m on weekdays and will be open Saturday noon for filings. A five percent penalty applies for late returns.
Lake Success May 14 United Nations sits before the 5 p m EST deadline to resolve Palestine issues. Delegates hope to protect Jerusalem and shrines while protests from Jews and Arabs intensify. The 58 member political committee plans an early meeting for two peace proposals, including a UN commissioner appointed by the trusteeship council.
New Orleans May 14 government cases wrap up after ten days of testimony in the trial of former Governor James A Noe Oil magnate William YT Burton and two others charged with conspiring to influence a U S court jury. prosecutors allege payments to jurors and attempts to sway panel members while defense counters deny all charges and questions credibility.
Senator John H. Overton of Louisiana, a leading advocate of navigation and flood control, died at Bethesda Naval Hospital at 4:50 a.m. EST after an emergency operation for an intestinal obstruction. He was 72, survived by wife and daughter Ruth Overton. Senate leaders paid tribute as the nation mourned a distinguished son and valiant leader.
Six plane crashes on four continents killed at least 20 and possibly 55 people. Among the dead was Lady Hartington, Kennedy family member, found near Privas France with two others. One survivor. 35 still missing. Crashes occurred in Belgian Congo Saudi Arabia Alaska Massachusetts and Switzerland. A Sabena DC-4 with 25 passengers and six crewmen disappeared and was later located wrecked in the Belgian Congo.
Washington May 1 The women's army corps marks its sixth birthday amid questions about its future. Congress may decide whether the WAC remains a regular army unit a reserve unit or expires with the original law. Generals Bradley and Vandenberg hail the corps as vital.
In Newport and South St Paul a mob of about 200 struck Cudahy plants forcing entry at midnight. They damaged interiors, freed hogs worth thousands, and seized 30 plant workers as hostages. Governor Luther Youngdahl ordered the guard to the strike towns and Adjutant General Ellard Walsh said a substantial task force would be deployed with motorized units.
Three wives stood vigil at a flooded Shamokin mine shaft as rescuers worked to reach three trapped miners 175 feet below after a heavy rain flooded the shaft two days earlier. Charles Bashore Edward Heck and Peter Gordon, all 42 or 35, were believed trapped in tunnels that may lead to escape routes. Rescue crews, aided by pumps, battled rising water as tapping indicated at least one miner survived.
Israel declares independence in Jerusalem as British rule ends at midnight. David Ben-Gurion leads a new government while Arab forces and the Arab League prepare a administration. Fierce fighting reported near Kfar Etzion and Bab El Wad as the regional conflict escalates.

A clash between the rules and armed services committees risked blocking House action on draft legislation while President Truman asks Congress for 2.434 billion dollars more for defense, lifting total defense outlays for the year to over 14 billion. The dispute centers on manpower plans including universal military training and a temporary draft, with the rules committee blocking hearings on the armed services panel's draft bill and a volunteer bonus alternative proposed by Rep. Leo E. Allen. Truman dismisses Allen’s plan as asinine while Andrews expects a draft bill hearing to occur next week.
Washington May 14 A one year extension of the reciprocal trade law with a far reaching modification was approved by the House ways and means committee by a 15 9 party line vote Congress would reserve for itself a veto power if the president exceeded bounds in making trade treaties and cutting tariffs President Truman had asked for a three year extension of the present law without changes Some Democrats protested that the amended form would sabotage the whole reciprocal trade program.
Amman Trans-Jordan May 14 The British evacuate Palestine at midnight yet Amman shows no war prep. No air raid drills curfews or mobilization. Thousands of men of military age remain unused and the local economy stays normal aside from gasoline shortages. Officials deny imminent invasion though refugees expect large forces. Some Arabs favor guerrilla raids over frontal assaults while isolated Jewish settlements may be attacked if weak. Three thousand Trans-Jordan Arab legion on British security duty. Conrad Cage Sr. 64 of 107 Ludwig Ave. dies after a monthlong illness. A Rosary is planned at his home Friday night with a 9:30 a.m. Saturday Mass at St. Paschal's Church in West Monroe. Mulhearn Funeral Home directs arrangements. Survived by wife and seven children in Louisiana Texas and California, plus a brother and sister.
Thomas Eugene Bearden a 17 year old from West Monroe La was appointed to West Point by Sen Overton D La after passing a national guard exam with high marks but was initially ineligible due to a 19 year age rule. The appointment was announced by Bruce Tucker administrative assistant to the late senator and allows entry July 1.
