The jury found Fred Barringer guilty of involuntary homicide in district court. The verdict came after a brief deliberation and sets the stage for sentencing later this month.
In Ruston Fred Barringer is found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Keith Toombs a West Monroe state highway officer. The jury deliberated 15 minutes reaching the verdict at 11 35 pm Judge David Garrett deferred sentence citing the maximum five year term. The trial hinged on Barringer being intoxicated and whether the curve on highway 80 caused the crash. State witnesses testified to drinking beer the night before the accident while Barringer and defense argued the curve caused the crash. The case was prosecuted by DA Frank Hawthorne and assistant George Lester with George Wesley Smith leading the defense.
Premier Benito Mussolini told the senate during a speech on the Ethiopian crisis that Italy is ready for any eventuality. The remark came amid tensions surrounding the Ethiopian situation and Italy’s regional policies.

Secretary Morgenthau said the dollar is sound and the United States is not unwilling to stabilize if major trading nations choose to act. He framed stabilization as a possible cooperative effort, noting U S currency reform was not a unilateral move and that Washington would not block foreign exchange stabilization when others act. He credited Roosevelt policies with saving the U S from disaster and indicated no fixed gold standard will be proclaimed without international action.

In Hattiesburg Mississippi Paul B Johnson formally launched his second bid for the Mississippi governorship declaring that huge sums of money and corrupt methods are used to defeat him in the August primary. He outlined policies for his administration as he faces five Democratic hopefuls including Hugh White Dennis Murphree Lester Franklin and Dr E A Copeland.
In Huntington Indiana Mayor C H Bangs defied injunctions by running a small municipal plant and was jailed for contempt. Extra guards surrounded the jail as citizens gathered but dispersed after Bangs made a stirring plea.
Monroe and West Monroe churches plan a two day district conference at Oak Ridge Methodist Church. The set includes all pastors local preachers and superannuated ministers from 20 charges with district staff and five elected delegates from each church. A sermon by Bishop Hoyt M. Dobbs and a youth rally led by Sydel Sims and Dr William H Wallace Jr are on the program with services and musical offerings.
A large crowd paid final tribute to Mrs Rudolph Bernstein 48 at 107 Texas Avenue Tuesday afternoon. Rabbi F K Hirsch conducted the service. Interment followed in the Jewish cemetery. Survived by husband Rudolph Bernstein and daughter Bernice, plus parents and siblings from Bastrop and nearby towns.
Senate action rejects Long's resolution to probe Postmaster General Farley. The roll call shows 62 voting against and 20 for the measure, with party and faction splits noted among Republicans, Democrats, and the Progressive La Follette group.
