Congress may seek broad relief legislation before conventions with Senator Robinson proposing a 300 million dollar relief fund and a 2 billion dollar construction program. President Hoover weighs a relief plan as party leaders push for non partisan action before June deadlines.
S S Malolo sails from Honolulu toward San Francisco with Lieut. Thomas H Massie, his wife, and her mother, Mrs Granville Fortescue. Convicted in Hawaii for manslaughter related to a lynching case, their sentences were commuted. They join passengers and decline stage offers as they head to new duties in San Francisco.
A miscellany of campus satire notes an unpopular contest amid beauty and popularity events. Senator James A. Noe arrives in Baton Rouge with Noe’s Ark and Gay Jimmy, while a junior college student studies chickens and a Monroe Y's Mens club payroll tallies spark interest. Police presence at Caldwell parish's Grayson funeral shocks locals as Grayson Bank Robber rumors fade.
Baton Rouge May 12. A concurrent resolution by Joe B. Hamiter requires state departments and institutions to submit sworn receipts and expenditures from July 1, 1930, to April 30, 1932. It lists names, positions, vehicle inventories, and all other maintenance costs for specified agencies.
In Angels Camp California miners scout a frog jumping contest to be held May 14 and 15 with rivalry between city and country frogs. Trainers boast of Jim and Yimbing as favorites while warning city frogs may lack stamina for the long leap.
The case of Francis Eugene Robbins charged with shooting to murder in the John Headlink shooting was indefinitely continued by Judge Percy Sander in Ouachita Parish District Court. A defense motion led to the delay, with prosecutors noting Robbins is ill and cannot stand trial for at least three days, making a trial in this term unlikely.
Positive ID of F. P. Elmore 48 as one of two bandits in the Bank of Grayson hold up last Friday. Elmore and S. C. Brassell 32 were arrested Tuesday night and moved to Columbia for further inquiry. Bank witnesses noted one robber covering face, possibly to hide a scar.
Baltimore report cites Southern banking gains since Reconstruction Finance Corporation formation. Kentucky reports no failures in six weeks to April 30 with three reopenings this year. Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Florida and other Southern states show cash boosts and general improvement in deposits and conditions.
The Ouachita parish district court awarded Herman Wink $750 and his wife $500 in a civil suit against Pelham Warren and others. Six defendants were named. six were exonerated. The case stems from a shooting on October 9 on Cheniere road near Buzzard Roast ranch as Wink’s car traveled home. Warren claimed cattle theft motivated his actions. the Winks sought $6,600.
Second Lieut. Arthur Devereux Parker 27 died at Fort Sam Houston after his plane crashed near Palacios during Fort Crockett maneuvers. He graduated from Princeton and Tulane law, worked as a reporter, and was nephew of former Louisiana governor John M. Parker.
S H McClary reports from Rep Riley J Wilson that a new federal building for Monroe is expected to start soon barring funding cuts. Plans from J W Smith and Associates will be checked in ten days and then bids will be advertised for a 30 day period.
The Maryland state convention names 16 delegates marking Governor Albert C. Ritchie’s official entry as Democratic presidential favorite. The DC Republican convention previously instructed two delegates for Hoover, bringing the convention total to 921 of 1154.
Dr Frank K Boland of Atlanta told the American Medical association in New Orleans that pot likker helps prevent appendicitis. He cited a survey of 4 270 Atlanta cases 1927 to 1931 showing few Negro patients and argued diet change is needed as appendicitis rises nationwide.
Harry D. Wilson state agriculture commissioner told News-Star that relief from the current low spirits rests on agricultural prices. He warned that cheap eggs milk and cheese keep the economy from normal recovery and predicted a small cotton crop this year due to conservative fertilizer use amid rising costs.
The Rev Arthur Vigrard a Sulphur Louisiana priest identified two men as the swindlers who took 100 dollars from him for a worthless bond. He traced them after spotting an automobile like the one used by the pair at St Michael's church in Chicago. Walter Pilkington and John Pinchot alias O'Brien both 40 confessed to the fraud.
Sen Huey Long said the Louisiana delegation of 20 will be solid for Roosevelt at the Democratic national convention. He expects Roosevelt to be nominated on a single ballot as party support coalesces and the unit rule brings all 20 votes to the New Yorker. The tally shows Roosevelt with 360 pledged or instructed votes and others short of him.
Senator Logan of Kentucky challenged Allan Taub before a senate committee over funding for eastern groups visiting Kentucky coal fields. Taub cited contributions from worker sympathizers and groups such as the National Miners Union and International Labor Defense, prompting Logan to press which entities were tied directly to Moscow communist headquarters.
Lafayette senator Waldo H. Dugas opened a concurrent resolution urging Congress to convene a national constitutional convention to repeal the eighteenth amendment and a bill to hold a Hood Act repeal referendum aligned with the next congressional election.
