Officials silent on Jim Crow suit in Arkansas
In Little Rock on May 11, Representative Mitchell of Illinois announced a $50,000 damage suit against the Pullman company Illinois Central railroad and Rock Island trustees to end segregated Jim Crow seating. Mitchell was en route to Hot Springs for health treatment when ejected from a Pullman car near Forrest City on April 21. The separate coach policy has existed since 1893 with a $25 fine for nonenforcement and state liability exemption. 1937 laws added two segregation provisions for buses and race tracks. A fossil find near Lompoc California notes skeletons of six inch fish trapped millions of years ago in a diatomite deposit.
