President Roosevelt proposed new military appropriations totaling 15 676 652 700 to lift near term war outlays to 49 billion. The plan covers an army of 7 700 000 officers and enlisted, including 200 000 in the WACs, with funds to support materiel deliveries and operations through December 1 1945.

Baton Rouge May 11 Rep Eno J Durbin of Livingston parish today introduced in the house a bill to levy a gas gathering tax of one cent per thousand feet, twice the levy now in effect. The tax would fund the department of public welfare. Durbin also pushed a constitutional amendment to raise parish property taxes from four to seven mills for those under seven and a half million. A third Durbin measure seeks to drop the voting age from 21 to 11. Other figures proposed funds for farm to market road building and vocational agriculture. In Caracas Carlos Medraza says Mexico plans to send 2500 aviators overseas to fight Germany.
Senate bills introduce measures on public officials serving in the armed forces designating deputies and extending qualification periods. Other items include civil service in Alexandria, road paving in Felicianas, child labor law changes, homestead exemption hike, and state office primaries. House actions allocate funds and amend narcotics, voting ages, and tax policies. Senate adjourns to 8 pm. several bills address taxes, real estate regulation, and criminal code reforms.

Governor Edward Martin forecasts a Republican victory in Pennsylvania next November citing middle class demand for change. He expects 45 counties outside Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to back the GOP while Democrats rally behind Roosevelt.

West Virginia results show Circuit Judge Clarence W. Meadows leading Rusix D. Holt for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination while Republican contests remain unsettled. Meadows leads Holt as returns come in from 733 of 2,796 precincts. Dawson and Funkhouser trade leads in the GOP governor race.
Forrest Davis cites a Post article quoting Marshal Stalin at Teheran that the Soviet Union has no desire to own Europe or expand abroad. He notes Stalin claimed the country is half populated and Russia has plenty to do at home, avoiding new territorial responsibilities.
