Baton Rouge May 10 The first annual Louisiana oratorical contest for women will be held tonight at Louisiana State University with contestants from Centenary Southwestern Louisiana Institute Louisiana College and LSU participating. The young ladies are unrestricted in their choice of subjects. A prize of 40 dollars will be awarded the winner. Miss Golda Schill will represent LSU Miss Lenora Walker Centenary Miss Helen Johnson Louisiana College and Miss Katherine Walker Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Louisiana State Normal a fifth member will not be represented.
D A Everett of Tulsa Oklahoma was elected president of the Southern Western Inter-Grotto Association and Tulsa chosen as the 1925 convention place at the conclusion of the annual meeting in Fort Smith Arkansas yesterday. Arthur R Neild of Shreveport Louisiana was elected first vice president.
The marriage intentions filing in Boston shows Joseph F. O Day treasurer of a dyestuff firm and Bird Millman world famous circus vaudeville tight and slack wire walker. She was previously married ten years ago to John C. Thomas broker of Sioux Falls South Dakota and had been divorced.
Three U S army aviators completing a 580 mile leg landed at Attu Island at 9 p m Pacific coast time after ten hours fifty minutes from Atka Island. The crew led by Lieutenant Lowell H Smith on the cruiser Chicago faced fair weather with head winds.
Washington May 10 The Japanese exclusion provision in the immigration bill will take effect July 1 1924 under a new conference agreement reached today by house and senate conferees. The plan is largely the same as the first agreement, with the March 1 1925 date dropped and alien seamen landing card rules removed.
The Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Louisiana adjourned in New Orleans after installing officers and naming Monroe as the 1925 meeting place. Mrs. Camilla L. Barrow of St Franciscille was unanimously chosen Worthy Grand Matron, with Edwin W. Booth and others elected to senior and associate grand roles.
Seven automobile bandits robbed the East Chicago postoffice, taking five employees and fifteen mail pouches. They escaped with an estimated 25 000 to 85 000 dollars after selecting four registered mail sacks and fleeing toward Chicago.
New Orleans reports three of the Amite six, Andrea Lamantia Joseph Giglio and Roy Leona, reaching Brooklyn and two others sent to New Orleans for burial. Bocchio to be buried in New Orleans while Lamantia Lamantia had stabbed himself and a razor blade was found in his coat lining prompting an inquiry by officials.
SHREVEPORT May 10 Two oil leases in Red River parish producing field totaling 584 acres with equipment to be sold at public auction in Coushatta Louisiana on June 7 for not less than 450000 by order in the bankruptcy suit of George Topham versus Continental Asphalt and Petroleum Company before Federal Judge Rufus E Foster.
District Attorney David I. Garrett and Attorney General A. V. Coco will file more than 150 charges against carbon black manufacturers in the Monroe gas field. Companies will be named as defendants to enable penalties and ouster actions for more than three violations. Trials aim for the week after next with Judge Fred M. Odom possible, targeting about fifteen firms as cases mount before the Legislature.
In Pittsburgh on May 10 a mass street car strike by 8200 motormen and conductors halted trolley service. Tunnels into the city clogged with fumes as drivers failed to shut off engines, causing a traffic jam and mass injuries. rescue units treated and hospitalised victims. Paris dispatches report the motor boat Kinga Maru capsized near Keeling Formosa with 100 aboard. Seventy dead and about 80 survivors were confirmed, including passengers and crew, in the incident that occurred off Formosa.
