Mrs. Shalia Massie her husband Lieut Thomas H Massie and Mrs Granville Fortescue left Hawaii aboard the liner Malolo amid police penalties and taunts as authorities sought to serve a subpoena for a retrial of four men tied to the Kahahawai lynching case. Lincoln Ream operated engine 2658 on the Missouri Pacific from Farmerville to Monroe. The 70 year old engineer made a final inspection before retirement to a life pension, amid a gathering of fellow workers and friends. He began as a fireman with the CBQ in 1883 and rose to engineer, later moving to Katy Road.

Albert B. Fall faced a delayed release as amended commitment papers from Washington were expected. Warden Ed Swope held the release pending payment of a $100,000 fine and confirmation of legal instructions. The former secretary and Doheny bribery case tied his freedom despite a court finding and a year sentence.
Washington May 9 United Press reports show several lawmakers advocating strict budget cuts also employ relatives or absentee workers on the payroll. Representative Will R Wood of Indiana, longtime appropriations leader, reportedly has an absentee clerk earning about 25 dollars weekly. His office could not confirm the location or status of the worker.
Akron the dirigible flies from Lakehurst New Jersey toward California passing over New Orleans at eight this morning. Commander Rosendahl notes possible rains and squalls over Texas as the ship heads for Beaumont. Crew reads news dispatches at breakfast as thousands in New Orleans look skyward and clocks are set back to central standard time.
Graduation exercises will be held in the sanitarium auditorium for 17 student nurses completing a three year training course at St Francis Sanitarium. Honor student Mary Alice Phillips of Monroe will deliver the valedictory and Rossie Lee Lusk of Eros is salutatorian. Officers include Ossie Parker of Monroe president Etola Hearn of Chatham vice president Fay Antley of West Monroe secretary-treasurer.
Increased freight on the Ouachita River leads to a weekly steamer service to Camden Arkansas by the Cooley interests starting next week. Henry Cooley and Captain Cook arrived in town and journeyed to Camden with the Ouachita. Large cargoes of sugar and other goods will be shipped to Camden for southern Arkansas distribution. Water transport offers cheaper rates than rail, boosting this method.
Mrs. F. T. Shelby, 21, of Brooklyn Ark., was burned possibly fatally and her husband, 28, was slightly injured when their automobile struck a tree and caught fire eleven miles from Pine Bluff on the Sheridan pike early today. The car apparently hit loose gravel and veered out of control.
Fourteen deaths were linked to spring storms across the south over the weekend including four in Tennessee and four in North Carolina. Lightning struck golfers in Nashville killing two boy caddies and a golfer. others drowned or were killed in car and train accidents across Georgia Mississippi Alabama Arkansas and North Carolina.
Washington May 9 The big boy tax bill advances toward enactment as Senate Finance Committee defies a rate reopening vote and pledges bipartisan effort to pass it. Appropriations work to cut more than 200 million to balance the 1933 budget while the House economy panel plans further government cost cuts. President Hoover pushes to rally support on the measures.
The American consulate at Nagasaki was bombed at 11 40 morning. Consul Henry B Hitchcock said a crude bomb from a passing car set the office entrance on fire but firemen and a garden hose stopped the blaze before heavy damage. Police are investigating.
Hartley E. Rubley 19, a high school senior and YMCA contest star, died in Atlanta from a self inflicted gunshot after attending a dinner for his mother. He pried open a trunk, retrieved his father’s revolver, and left no suicide note. Family cited nervous breakdown and ill health following appendicitis. He left athletic certificates and clippings neatly arranged.
Twenty six members of the Monroe police sheriff and fire departments left at noon to attend the funeral of Mrs. S. T. Tarver mother of L. V. Tarver superintendent of Monroe police. Judge Harper announced no city court this afternoon due to the absence of many officers.
Edward F. McGrady of the American Federation of Labor told a Senate committee that unrelieved unemployment risks revolt. He warned that if no action is taken and hunger persists, doors to revolution may open, urging passage of relief measures under the Costigan bill.
