Governor John M. Parker delivers a lengthy biennial message detailing levee lines and costs, state institutions, and road progress. He notes Louisiana’s levee responsibilities extend into Arkansas and urges national action, while highlighting road and institution achievements and funding figures.
The Monroe Lions Club adopted a resolution inviting the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Louisiana to hold next year’s state convention in Monroe. A delegation headed by Mrs. J. B. Jones and others will work for Monroe. The group also noted Judge Fred M. Odom’s district court remarks on physicians issuing liquor prescriptions, while local speakers including A. K. Kilpatrick and Dr. George Wright attended.
The grand jury reports the parish jail and court house are very old and unsuited to their purpose though kept as well as possible under the circumstances. They adjourn with no further business after noting prior cases were handled by the district attorney by bills of information.
At Genoa on May 9 the Russian problem dominated cabinet talks in Washington and Belgium emerged as the focal point of dispute over the Russian issue. American officials asserted the United States will not recognize private or general commercial arrangements in Russia, signaling a firm US stand.
A weak spot in the Mississippi river levee above Arkansas City prompts a call from Mayor Arnold Bernstein after a message from J W Summerlin of the Tensas Basin Levee Board. Fifty to seventy five additional men are requested to report to the Missouri Pacific depot before ten tonight. The Monroe police are mobilizing crews and planters and employers are urged to contribute workers.
New subscriptions to the Red Cross Relief Fund are recorded as the flood crisis passes. The homeless need shelter until waters recede and homes are livable again. Donors include Dr. A H Gladden W D King and Monroe Council of Catholic Men. Cash gifts noted.
Miss Minnie L Stockton reports a liberal Red Cross ration allotment at the Harrisonburg camp, with no suffering or want. Refugees arrive daily, and 500+ people received ten day rations. funds should go through the Louisiana State Relief Committee in Baton Rouge. Company G is praised for efficient aid, Monroe residents noted with pride.
Judge Trousdale disposed of the case involving Syrian residents Joseph Mickel P T Mickel D Solomon N Thomas Calver Solomon F Kalil T Solomon and John Solomon. Five defendants were fined $12.50 with costs and the others dismissed with a caution after a front of Princess theatre disturbance.
The Marx Hardware Company filed articles of incorporation under state laws to operate a general hardware business in Monroe. Incorporators are local residents. board includes Joe Marx Jr president and GM Estelle Marx vice president and Albert Weil secretary treasurer. Capital stock is $10,000.
Welfare clubs on West Monroe completed plans for Clean-Up Week with hand bills distributed by local women to inform residents. Citizens volunteer wagons to haul trash including Fred Mitchel R P Benson O O Clark and C C Bell along with city cart and an extra driver providing support.
More than 500 children from city and parish schools participate in School Play Week on City School playground and courthouse square. Fourth and first graders lead games with relay races, mass plays, and a grand Saturday finale including a Knighting Ceremony and Dearest Wish pageant. event highlights community support and remarks from officials. A gas well in Morehouse parish by Ouachita National Gas & Oil Co. reports 5,888,000 cubic feet daily capacity and gas strike at 2234 feet in section 29-20-4.
Five people died in a Marengo Illinois blaze that destroyed the Bourke home. August Bourke Jr and his four children were killed in the fire, authorities reported.
Natchez May 9 relief teams pushing into inundated areas along the Black river report marooned residents stay in waterlogged homes. Red Cross Major Charles Holcombe says conditions are pitiful as Wanderer with Red Cross flag visits Natchez en route from Baton Rouge to Ferriday, carrying Louisiana relief officials. Baton Rouge engineers say levee work in Pointe Coupee parish will continue until water begins to recede after yesterday’s inspection.
The war department plans the Eighth United States Infantry to depart Europe in late June, the last combat unit to leave. Its headquarters will be at Fort Scriven near Savannah, per a letter from Secretary Weeks to Senator Harris of Georgia.
