Auditors urge revenue changes for tax collection efficiency

Louisiana legislative auditor J. B. Lancaster called for administrative changes in the Department of Revenue after reviewing fiscal years through 1971. He noted 18 largely autonomous divisions lacking coordination, missing cost accounting, and delays in income tax refunds due to unclaimed or undelivered checks. He proposed using data processing to coordinate divisions and cancel unclaimed refunds after a reasonable period.

Flash Floods and Twisters Strike Harrison Gulfport Area

About 50 families were evacuated as flash floods from a thunderstorm and multiple tornadoes caused damage in Harrison County. The Bay Wave Yacht Club roof was torn, two people were hospitalized, and several homes were damaged in Gulfport and nearby areas. No injuries were reported in Poplarville, while power outages occurred in Pascagoula.

Woman Killed In Two-Car Wreck At Local Intersection

An unidentified white woman died in a two car crash around 10 a.m. at the Ruffin Drive and U.S. 165 Bypass intersection. John Wayne Hefner, 40, of Bastrop, was hospitalized at St. Francis for further treatment. State police continue investigation.

Henry Elected Speaker Of Louisiana House

Rep. E. L. Bubba Henry of Jonesboro was elected speaker of the Louisiana House by acclamation as the 60 day session began. He campaigned as an independent and pledged to make the House an effective body while seeking independence from the executive branch. Henry earned the governor elect Edwin Edwards’ endorsement despite not being the governor’s first choice. The House named David Poynter as clerk and Richard L. Barrios as sergeant at arms, with Walter Rigby chosen to Represent the House on the Legislative Bureau. Senate leaders elected Sen. Michael O Keefe president pro tempore. Five veteran lawmakers plus newly elected black legislator Alphonse Jackson will serve as floor leaders for Gov. Edwards.
