Crew members aboard the Stramer Manprow or similar vessel assert that German submarines were supplied by ships flying American flags. The claim centers on alleged flag deception aiding submarine operations.
Sailors from the Manitowoc Muskegon and Alaquash say ships flying the American flag supplied German submarines with coal fuel and food en route from Buenos Aires to New York. The vessels reportedly transferred cargo between Buenos Aires and St Thomas, now U S territory, while detainment at St Thomas hangs on. Separately the May wheat market hit a record 93 cents a bushel and the Agriculture Department forecasts a winter wheat crop of 66,116,000 bushels amid a 75.2 percent normal condition as of May 1.
The Navy Department says it is investigating the steamer Mani Towoc and other American Transatlantic Company vessels for alleged supplies to German submarines in the Atlantic. The company, with offices in New York and Boston, has ships under investigation at St Thomas, Virgin Islands.
