Hot Springs Virginia reports that twenty economists briefed the Business Council on a moderate growth path for the year. They forecast real growth around three percent with inflation hazards and no need for new stimulus measures. Consumer spending and housing are seen strengthening, with autos and appliances driving demand.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the April unemployment rate at 6.1 percent, up 0.1 point from March. Black unemployment climbs to 10 percent, the highest since January 1984, while whites hold at 5.6 percent and teen unemployment stays near 17.2 percent.

About 600 area residents are invited to a waste disposal symposium on May 20 at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. The event, sponsored by North Delta in partnership with NLU and the Louisiana Department of Health, runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Northeast Theatre with experts including John E. Trygg and Gilmer W. Engelhardt. A Q A session follows, with mayors, police jurors, and agriculture and industry reps invited to attend. North Delta will also present a comprehensive waste disposal plan to Union Parish officials and has drafted plans for Morehouse Franklin and West Carroll parishes.
