President Kennedy lauded Alan Shepard's 115 mile space flight while calling for increased federal funding to boost U S space exploration. He pledged a substantially larger effort and asked Congress for additional appropriations as he acknowledged being behind the Soviet Union but determined to advance.
President Kennedy said the United States is weighing a complete embargo on trade with Cuba. He noted current shipments are only food and medicine and discussed NSC discussions. He also ruled out plans to train Cuban exiles or form a U.S. based Cuban force. He proposed a July 15 Inter‑American Economic and Social Council extraordinary meeting to advance economic progress in the Americas.
Farmerville Louisiana prominent attorney and political figure Harvey G Fields 79 died at Norris Booth Clinic after throat paralysis struck him last Sunday. A native of Marksville Avoyelles Parish he served as state senator district attorney third judicial district and chaired the Louisiana Public Service Commission among other posts. Fields practiced law in Farmerville and Shreveport for 34 years and was honored by Tulane University in 1953.
The first commercial flight from Cuba since Fidel Castro proclaimed the country socialist arrived in Miami with 122 passengers, mostly Cubans, aboard a Pan American World Airways De Havilland plane. Six Americans were initially reported, including Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Johnson. The aircraft normally seats 66 and carried many children.
Laos war negotiators from royalists and Pathet Lao failed to agree on a cease fire framework or a site for future talks. A military team led by Brig Gen Sing Rathanasamay met in Hin Heup to discuss cease fire terms while political leaders eyed Luang Prabang for high level discussions. Britain and the Soviet Union announced an international control commission would supervise the truce in Laos.
Guatemala AP Interior Minister Rodolfo Martinez Sobral said Carlos Marcelo, former New Orleans figure, was deported to El Salvador. A police squad allegedly moved Marcelo and attorney Michael Maroon to Candelaria, El Salvador, Wednesday night amid unclear travel documents. Salvadoran immigration officials previously denied entry and questioned Marcelo’s claimed Guatemalan citizenship based on a disputed birth certificate.
Western Oklahoma towns Howe and Richeart were struck by a tornado that killed at least ten people and injured about forty. Rescue teams battled debris as investigators noted two infants among the dead and a light plane crash near Heavener was reported. The disaster occurred near Lake Wister in the hills of southeast Oklahoma.
Four men died after inhaling gas fumes inside and near the top of a 6 foot tall blast furnace at Republic Steel Corp in Gadsden Alabama. Outside contractors were relining the furnace which had been shut down April 22. Charles Martin Jr. was the Republic employee among the deceased. Superintendent Emmett Jones was overcome while attempting a rescue and hospitalized.
Former vice president Richard Nixon warned that U.S. prestige must be backed by decisive action in Cuba and future aims. He urged finishing what is started and avoiding talk bigger than action, saying failures could deter policymakers from bold steps.
Forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with widely scattered thundershowers possible today. Temperatures will range from the mid 60s to mid 70s, similar to yesterday. Friday’s high reached 86 and low 60.
Five north Louisiana parish registrars testified before the Civil Rights Commission in New Orleans as part of its probe into alleged Negro voting-rights denials. Mary Ethel Fox Plaquemines Mary K Brice Bossier Winnice Clement Webster Quitman Crouch St. Helena Estelle Wilder Jackson described qualification tests and SR-1 form requirements for registration and age calculations.
About 50 students from St Rita's Catholic School in New Orleans were treated at Ochisner Foundation Hospital on Friday for suspected food poisoning. None were seriously ill. Hospital officials said the illness likely stemmed from food poisoning and that the worst appeared over. The school was closed after the incident and most children were released to their parents.
Alan B. Shepard Jr rested after a 15 minute suborbital flight that reached 5 100 miles per hour. He will undergo tests with doctors and psychologists before a White House reception and possible ticker tape parade. Kennedy congratulated him and Dryden hinted at future orbital missions.
