Senator Bronson M. Cutting of New Mexico and three others die when a TWA transport crashes in fog near Atlanta Missouri. Nine are injured including four Hollywood film figures and two children. Cutting was en route to Washington to vote on the bonus bill.
Army aviation headquarters reported two American pilots Mark Stewart and Jerry Sienden were arrested with three Chinese on a charges of conspiring to smuggle aliens to the United States. Stewart’s alias is Keith Bandy from Monroe Louisiana and Sienden is Nat Schwartz of Highland Park New Jersey. Schwartz was caught leading three Chinese through woods near Jaruco to reach a plane.
Parents of Keith Bandy 19 doubt he was the youth arrested for conspiring to smuggle Chinese into the United States. They note his adventurous spirit, his earlier airplane flight, and lack of money, while acknowledging the possibility he could have been involved. The family reports he was grounded after a Texas crash and recently worked in a Miami bakery.
The U S Supreme Court mandate ordering new trials for Haywood Patterson and Clarence Norris, two black defendants in the Scottsboro case, arrived at the Alabama Supreme Court today in Montgomery on May 6.
Harry Sawyer a 235 pound gambling hall operator arrested on the Mississippi gulf coast Friday night as a suspect in the kidnapping of Ed ward G Bremer wealthy St Paul banker awaited removal to Minnesota today. Bond set at 100000 he could not meet. Mrs Sawyer traveled to St Paul to aid his fight for liberty.
Widespread interest marked the announcement of a mass meeting of farmers from 15 parishes in northeast Louisiana to be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Central Grammar School. State speakers will discuss the cotton program and present crucial facts. Farmers will protest abandonment or curtailment of agricultural adjustment taxes and select representatives to appeal to Congress. Similar meetings will occur across the state. Merchants bankers and local business leaders are urged to attend due to AAA program impact on regional economy.
Robert Allen Edwards, known as the American tragedy, was executed at Rockview Prison for the murder of Freda McKechnie. He walked calmly to the electric chair, praying as he faced death at 12:20 to 12:34 a.m., with clergy nearby and family present.
A bureau of governmental research report says New Orleans is solvent and that placing financing in federal court was for a harbor of refuge in a political feud. The city shows a December 31 balance of 505,242 and bondholders need fear no financial trouble.
The Supreme Court ruled the railroad retirement act unconstitutional, invalidating key provisions applying to interstate carriers and retirees. Justice Roberts articulated that the act cannot be severed and fails as an interstate commerce regulation. the decision, 5 to 4, follows lower court findings and a Nixon-era dispute over pre enactment service credits.
May 6 New Orleans A man 46 James Fowler is recovering at Charity Hospital from a Sunday black widow bite. Biologists rush experiments to find effective extermination as Fowler endures intense pain and anti venom treatment. The bite came after a nest was found under a bench in Memphis street yard.
King George V and Queen Mary attend St Pauls for thanksgiving on the silver jubilee as crowds line the route from Buckingham Palace. A Communist banner at Luc gate Circus provokes a tense moment before the mob tears it apart while a portion is saved for safekeeping.
Major R. V. St. Dizier of Baton Rouge was elected president of the Louisiana Reserve Officers association at the annual convention in New Orleans. Baton Rouge will host the next convention in Lafayette. Other officers include Lt Whitfield Jack Shreveport vice president Lt Nugent Hill Alexandria treasurer Lt-Col R L A Innest New Orleans judge advocate and Lt Fred Fenn Baton Rouge historian.
Six people drown near Opelousas when a wagon carrying the Soileau family and the Zeringues was swept into floodwater after a bridge washed out. Mrs Zeringue survived as others perished in the Spanish Grant area where ten families remain marooned and rescue teams work to deliver food and aid.
A flood warning was issued for Red river above Shreveport as bayous and streams in the Ark La Tex area swelled by heavy rains. The weather bureau released the bulletin detailing rising water levels and potential impacts along the Red River corridor.
In Washington on May 6 the Senate appears set to reject the Harrison compromise bonus bill in favor of immediate cash payments. Democratic leaders weigh strategy to kill the bill via a veto and consider backing the inflationary Patman bill. Father Coughlin urged telegrams to senators backing Patman, attacking the Vinson bill as aiding Wall Street.
Texas May 6 officers surrounding two robbers at the First State bank shot and killed one man and wounded the other as they fled firing on officers. Neither assailant identified.

Senator Bronson M. Cutting of New Mexico and at least three others were killed in a Transcontinental Western Air transport plane crash before dawn today near Atlanta Missouri. The dead include pilot Harvey Bolton and co pilot Kenneth Greeson both of Kansas City and an unidentified woman. Nine others were admitted to Samaritan hospital at Macon.
The senate adjourned early in honor of Senator Cutting of New Mexico. House leaders planned to cut short today’s session and adjourn in midafternoon.
Lifeless passengers listed include Mr and Mrs William Kaplan of unknown address and Mrs D L Mesker wife of TWA Paul Wing. Also named are Charles Wing Henry Sharpe and C B Drew of unknown addresses. Senator Cutting seated No 11 found with cash 576 in his billfold plus his mother’s photo and a check to a telephone company. An unidentified middle aged woman is described in the undertaker’s records.
