Tokyo reports say Italian and German envoys met Foreign Minister Arita to discuss Europe. Officials deny any plan for a tripartite agreement and insist Japan would not unconditionally aid Germany in European affairs.
Poland's Colonel Joseph Beck rejected Hitler's demands for Danzig and a broad German corridor but indicated room to negotiate. France backed Beck's stance, while German leaders met at Berchtesgaden to discuss Poland's response. The exchange followed Berlin’s critical press and ongoing diplomatic pressure ahead of possible talks.
Treasury agents led by Gordon Pike and John Buchal raided Mrs. James C. Ayer at 435 East Fifty-second Street finding about 30000 dollars worth of Parisian gowns and jewelry. Delwyn Drummond of Paducah Texas died from skull and internal injuries after a collision two miles south of Temple on the Temple highway. A murder and driving while intoxicated charge had been filed against him in the deaths of Louise Tilley of Dallas Talley Hill Kenneth Jensen and J F Hamil of Temple. Miss Tilley rode with Drummond in the crash that killed four.
Fire and shelling from an air raid ravaged Chungking yesterday, with hundreds trapped and about 2000 feared dead or wounded. The blaze spread across at least one eighth of the city as thousands crowded the Yangtze banks seeking transport. Foreigners, including Americans, were ferried to safety aboard Tutuila and Falcon gunboats. Landing parties guided evacuees past burning buildings as darkness fell. Chungking lies 1,370 miles above Shanghai.
In London on May 5 King George VI started his final day at Buckingham Palace before leaving for Canada and the United States. He met with state papers, held a privy council, and received Prime Minister Chamberlain at 11:30 a.m. A farewell audience marked the morning as Queen Elizabeth managed dress fittings and trunks for the journey aboard the Empress of Australia. Two escort cruisers will accompany the liner for the voyage.
The body of Edward L. Schneider, a business aide to Boss T. J. Pendergast, was recovered from the Missouri River near Kansas City. His car, with notes of two deaths by action, was found on a Missouri river bridge. He had testified before a federal grand jury that indicted Pendergast for income tax evasion. A signet ring with E. S. S initials identified the body.

In Jackson Tennessee a 20 year old unemployed man used a crude fake bomb in a fatal bid to compel 70 year old widow Alma J. Donnell to marry him. The tragedy also killed Lee J. Burns aged 20, both from Oklahoma City. Witnesses said Donnell fled the courthouse crying for help as Burns sought a witness after obtaining a marriage license. Local authorities labeled the case murder and suicide.
A committee led by Mayor H. D. Landis of Winnsboro Mayor German Baker of St. Joseph and J M Breard of Monroe will push for a public hearing with L P Abernathy and Governor Leche in Baton Rouge on May 17 to discuss hard surfacing 32 miles of road between St Joseph and Winnsboro. The meeting drew officials from Winnsboro and St Joseph plus Twin City Chamber members.
Dean C. C. Calvert announced a tuition cut from 40 to 25 dollars per year including all fees. The move follows instruction from President James Monroe Smith of LSU to boost attendance and, with an enlarged plant and planned bus service, raise the college’s appeal. The school will officially be named Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University.
Vienna reports persistent but unverified rumors that Duke Ernst Hohenberg 35 son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand died in Buchenwald concentration camp Germany. His brother Duke Max 37 was also interned after the 1938 Austrian Anschluss and released months earlier.
Mrs. Nancy Jane Brown, 67, died in Leesville hospital from burns suffered when she tried to recover keepsakes from her burning home ten miles from Leesville. She crawled to the porch where her husband Gus Brown found her, clothes burned from her body.
