Sergeant Alvin C. York to Visit Monroe in June
The World War hero Alvin C. York, praised by Marshal Foch as the greatest private soldier, will visit Monroe for the Veterans of Foreign Wars encampment. York, from Pall Mall Tennessee, will arrive Saturday morning June 18, take part in the parade, and deliver a public address. His famed feat occurred October 7 1918 at Chatel Chehery France under heavy fire, after which he captured 132 German soldiers.

Haynesville Town Marshal Convicted in Bank Robbery Case
After 45 minutes of deliberation a jury in Homer Louisiana district court found H B Burley town marshal of Haynesville guilty as an accessory in the Planters Bank and Trust Company robbery. Co-defendants Odie Burk and Wiley Balthrop already got nine year sentences. The robbery involved nearly $17000 and witness Charlie McWilliams testified Burley provided protection and escape information and claimed $2400 of loot. Mrs Burley cried as verdict was read. Burley had served as town marshal for eight years.
