D Swayze erecting a modern packing house on farm land one mile east of Monroe along the V S and P road. The new facility will process fifty hogs and twenty five cattle daily with curing and by product operations including sausage lard and tongue. Construction should be finished and plant in operation by early June.
Arkansas Gazette reports 900 machinists 200 apprentices and foremen affected as union dispute over shop rules sparks walkouts across Missouri Pacific Mountain region. About 1 100 workers impacted, with 148 machinists 42 apprentices at Baring Cross shop joining at 10 am. Ten negro helpers strike in solidarity. foremen mostly remain at work. Locations include Buren McGehee Fer ry La Monroe La Tex ana Alexandria Cotter Paragould Helena and others. 25 20 11 4 6 4 25 3 4 4 35 cited. About 25 affected in St Louis and 150 at Sedalia. Strike tied to shop rules, not wage demands.
A morning strike over terms with railroad officials ended quickly as representatives agreed to demands. Settlement occurred within two hours and by noon the walkout was called off through issued messages.
A blaze at the Florence Hotel in Palestine Texas today injured several people including traveling man J C Crawthorne who broke his hips and Mrs W L Moore proprietor’s wife who fell from a fire escape. Others sustained minor injuries as the hotel was practically destroyed.
In Washington on May 4 the Senate passed a bill with an appropriation to raise the ill fated Maine from Havana harbor, a measure already approved by the House.

The freight steamer Santurce and the tank steamer Ligonier collided off Cape Cod. Santurce arrived at Provincetown with a 12 foot hole in her starboard side and water in the after compartment. No injuries. several hundred crew jumped aboard the Ligonier. The Ligonier carried oil from Port Arthur to Beverly. Santurce had discharged sugar at Boston and was bound to sea.
Isburg Police Sergeant Thomas J Morley declined President Taft’s invitation to sit with him at the ball game and banquet May 2, citing a retiring nature and dislike of notoriety. He praises Taft but explains he would prefer to meet the president under other circumstances.

In the afternoon the entire congress considered artificial immunization as a topic. Last night Dr Edward L Trudeau of Saranac Lake New York president of the association spoke on The Value of Optimism in Medicine to the congress.
Mississippi planters shift to sunflowers as a major line of defense against boll weevil. Growers south of Vicksburg buy large sunflower seed quantities while Port Gibson merchants offer free seed to customers. Sunflowers attract weevils and may reduce cotton damage, with various planting strategies under discussion.
Montgomery reports show Emmett O Neal wins governorship by about 12 000 in Democratic primary while Bankhead leads a field for United States senator. Walter Seed strong for lieutenant governor. Thomas trails. Uncertain results remain with some counties yet to report official canvass.
Dr. J L Miner of Memphis reported to the American Ophthalmological Society that among children, Negroes show better normal vision and fewer refractive errors than Whites, with less aging impact on the eye and rare cross eyes, though trachoma is more common among the colored.
Kansas City May 4 Lieutenant Reginald Owen and his bride Mrs Ruth Bryan Leavitt spent last night in Kansas City on their wedding trip from Lincoln Nebraska toward Jamaica. They plan to depart for the South late today.
President Taft arrived in St Louis and was greeted by a reception committee from the Business Men's League before being escorted to the Commercial Club for breakfast.
Special agent Franklin Kennedy of the U.S. Pension Bureau spends the day in Monroe examining claims. Kennedy operates from a headquarters in Vicksburg.

New Orleans, May 4. Antony Fallo of 4537 Camp Street, born November 11, 1809, is among the few to witness Halley’s comet in 1835 and 1853 and now again in 1910. He recalls Italy, emigrated to the United States in 1852, and notes 26 great grandchildren in his family.
