A Senate special committee will invite all presidential contenders to testify on campaign expenditures. Telegrams were sent asking for convenient dates and the names of agents who can report expenditures. The panel includes 14 candidates from both parties. hearings may begin next Monday in Washington.
Alexander Johnson of New York, dean of all social workers, at the National Conference of Social Work in Memphis says birth control and information are important signs of civilization's progress. He argues intelligent people have practiced birth control for generations and notes population would double every 15 years without it. He predicts eventual church and state recognition.
Edwin S. Cunningham, American consul general in Shanghai, said Walter B. Wilson Jr. of Greenville, NC, is missing and likely wandering the countryside with a blank mind rather than dying by his own hand. Wilson, in poor health, had written a letter from a Shanghai golf club indicating low mood. The consulate broadcast his photo.
Ouachita Gas Company announces sale of Arkansas holdings of the S Hunter estate to Industrial Gas Company of Bastrop Louisiana. The deal price is not disclosed. The estate reportedly bought the property six months earlier for about 1.8 million dollars, including a 100 mile pipeline from Monroe to El Dorado and Camden, with leases on ~50000 acres of gas land near Monroe.
Efforts to reach Major W. J. Parkes failed as he was away in El Dorado. An El Dorado paper quotes him saying the deal is a sale of all Ouachita Natural Gas Co properties and its Arkansas pipeline links from Monroe fields, not a stock purchase. He also denies any association between H. C. Couch and the Industrial Gas Co.
In Hackberry LA May 3 the Yount Lee Oil Co brought in its No 8 state well, estimated at 300 barrels daily. The No 6 well also flows, giving the firm three channel wells in Hackberry with total output 2 300 barrels a day and Louisiana receiving one eighth of the oil.
Voters in Ouachita parish will decide next Tuesday on continuing the three and a half mill tax for parish school support. The tax is said to impose no added burden and funds a new high school unit, Sterlington space, and two more West Monroe schools due to rapid growth. May 9 bids for new buildings will open if the measure passes. May 10 school board will canvass results and award bids if satisfactory.
A state board subcommittee concluded a private disciplinary probe at Ruston after 15 hours of testimony from Tech students faculty and local officials. The panel will report its findings to the State board in New Orleans with President John R. Conniff present throughout the sessions.
A. B. Rose of Youngstown Ohio and five companions were in a car that left the road six miles west of Chatham. The vehicle rolled three times after a left rear tire blew out on loose gravel. Rose suffers motor paralysis with both legs immobile. others had cuts and bruises. Driver Joe Zipkas of Bastrop, the group from McGehee Monroe and Dermott were en route to Jonesboro. Rose was taken to St Francis Sanitarium after first aid at Chatham.
SHREVEPORT La May 3 Mrs Jennie Whalen 46 is jailed on a 1500 bail on a manslaughter charge connected to the death of her husband Lawrence Buck Whalen who died from gunshot wounds alleged to have been inflicted by his wife The shooting occurred a week ago at the Warlaw home near Shreveport The woman claimed self defense.
The Senate cotton investigating panel renewed its inquiry into world and U S carry-over figures for 1927. Harvey J. Zimmerman of the Census Bureau testified the Agriculture Department issued its own world carry-over statement, while Census did not separate American from foreign cotton. He said no consultation occurred between agencies and expressed doubt the Agriculture Department would act without legal warrant again.
The sturdy Italia headed north from Seddin toward the Arctic fringe to explore polar lands. It took off from the Seddin airdome at 3 20 am and is aboard an Italian expedition.
Washington May 3. House and Senate conferees reaffirmed yesterday’s action and agreed on the report for the final form of the 325 million dollar Mississippi River bill. The agreement aims to prompt quick floor action in both houses.
W. L. Ethridge president of the Monroe and West Monroe Chamber of Commerce reports in a telegram that the flood control bill agreed by house and senate conferees is the best under the circumstances. He plans to return to Monroe tonight as the measure proceeds to the senate and then the president.
Conference changes push the flood control measure toward final approval with a $825,000,000 authorization. A three engineer board will advise on Mississippi plans while the president must approve decisions. The U S bears flood responsibility but states pay for levees and rights of way.
General Umberto Nobile at Kings Bay Spitzbergen confirms continuous communication with Landsort and Vaxholm stations. He repeats that everything is all right and the Italia travels at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour.
General Umberto Nobile will command the Italia with Titiana the fox terrier aboard as it aims for Kings Bay Spitzbergen. The airship follows plans from the Norge expedition and may proceed to Lenin Land and Peary routes, with gas refueling stops en route.
Alvin W. Krech chairman of the board of trustees of the Equitable Trust Company died suddenly in his New York office. He served as director or chair of multiple railroads and firms including Denver and Rio Grande Western Ann Arbor Norfolk Southern Wabash Western Maryland and Western Pacific and led the Equitable Trust and related enterprises. Death attributed to angina pectoris occurred at his desk.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy began its 29th annual session in Alexandria Louisiana with Mrs L A Rabin presiding. Mayors and local officials welcomed participants as Rev W Sick offered the invocation and speakers from New Orleans and veteran Geo W Bolton addressed the gathering. Flags were presented including the American and Louisiana banners and a T O Moore Chapter flag.
The Democratic state convention in Hartford pledges its delegation to vote for Gov. Alfred E. Smith of New York for the presidency until he releases them from the commitment. The move signals strong support amid the 1924 campaign era.
Lieut Royal V. Thomas launched from Roosevelt Field at 12 30 01 pm to fly solo in the Bellanca Reliance. He plans to stay aloft past 6 00 pm tomorrow to exceed the 53 hour 36 minute 41 second record set by Stinson and Haldeman. He relies on a radio, drugs to stay awake, a right hand relief pilot method, roast chickens and soup to endure. The airplane carries 480 gallons of fuel after dumping 50 gallons earlier.
Strong winds and violent rain storms swept northwestern Iowa and northeastern Nebraska last night causing damage that may exceed 100000 dollars. One man was seriously injured by flying timber as Clark Nebraska buildings were wrecked. Near Neville Iowa the wind damage was around 50000 dollars.
Washington May 3 Flood bill talks shift as conferees concede on compensation and control of floodways to avert a veto. Officials say floodways and adjacent lands remain protected with compensation for the former and proper control for the latter amid president’s refusal to sign a bill containing broad floodway clauses.
