An armed booby trapped car exploded at a dockside hiring office in Algiers, killing eight and wounding about fifty as a crowd of 1500 Moslems fled. Police reported European suspects linked to the European Secret Army Organisation, with violence fueling tensions amid Algeria’s independence struggle.
Washington AP reports a panel discussion at the 1962 U S Chamber of Commerce convention lifted the steel price battle into focus. A tabloid paper the World circulated to delegates carried a Kennedy quotation about businessmen. White House disputes the quote though the discussion highlighted Kennedy relations with business leaders and potential partisan effects.
Margaret Dixon, managing editor of the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate, predicted Tuesday night that a sales tax proposal will be introduced in the upcoming legislative session. She called it a possible solution to Louisiana's financial crisis dating back to the Kennon administration and accused the current administration of compounding the felony.
In Little Rock, Governor Orval Faubus, who said last March he would leave politics, announced he will run for a fifth term. The panel would include three House members and two senators and meet at a $50 daily allowance.
Former Gov Raymond Gary led the Oklahoma Democratic gubernatorial primary with a runoff likely on May 22 as 3100 precincts reported. James E Folsom trailed in Alabama where two lesser known candidates debated racial policy and a May 29 runoff loomed. Senatorial contests saw Mike Monroney winning a third term in Oklahoma and Lister Hill securing Alabama's seventh term with Wallace and DeGraffenried close behind.
Louisiana Attorney General Jack Gremillion denounced a Washington sourced report that the spillover escrow fund from offshore oil revenues could yield only 80 million. He called the figure audacious and ridiculous, insisting no agreement existed or had been signed. He warned against accepting or recommending such a small sum to the governor and legislature.
In Lisbon and Porto police and troops dispersed May Day clashes leaving at least one demonstrator dead from a head gunshot and 42 others hospitalized, including two officers. Baton Rouge AP Dr David Brown declares Baker residents do not need typhoid shots after flooding. Drinking water is safe and contaminated wells have been chlorinated. About 2 200 persons have been inoculated and only 40 acres of 3 700 acres flooded. Brown cites unnecessary injections in town.

U S District Judge Sidney C. Mize ruled nine Mississippi segregation statutes unconstitutional and upheld only the rights of the three plaintiffs to segregated transportation. He said the suit could not be treated as a class action and found the laws violated the 14th Amendment while detailing parties and affected entities. The text also notes mild, clear to partly cloudy weather with a high of 78 expected midweek.

The arrest of Lola Perkins a 56 year old woman linked to a 365000 swindle of Lake Providence land owner was disclosed in St. Louis. Her husband Rev Matthew Perkins 59 was jailed previously on 10000 bond. They face theft warrants in the United Rock of Charity case a group described as a trust fund network with female members called plucks and male members rocks. The Perkins reportedly drew over 365000 from Robert Amacker and other damages amounting to 11767 were awarded to an East St. Louis church group against them.
Six broke, jobless Black men arrived in New York by bus from New Orleans funded by the White Citizens' Council and were said to have jobs lined up by a Baltimore contractor and a service union. Roy Hamilton, 23, expressed anger at the Council while Leon Horne, 25, a former Freedom Rider, said he sought revenge. The men were greeted by Travelers Aid, NAACP, and Urban League representatives as they planned to work and not rely on welfare.
