Senators monitor Hopkins as preparations proceed for a sweeping investigation of relief programs. The effort aims to determine compliance and uncover potential misuse of funds. Authorities expect formal actions as inquiries broaden.
Senators planned a sweeping probe into relief distribution as Hopkins threatened to withhold federal funds from noncompliant states. He moved to allocate grants from a $100 million May relief fund while states like Illinois Pennsylvania Missouri faced pressure to increase local contributions. The Senate launched a general investigation into relief policy and administration.
Representative Rupert R. Peyton an anti Huey Long lawmaker from Caddo parish said Secretary Ickes asked for more details on his plan to violate the PWA restriction law. Peyton noted the law makes it a jail offense to apply for or receive a PWA loan unless handled through the state advisory board. He said Ickes showed interest and asked for further details and that he has sent a reply.
Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald announced that Britain will accelerate air force growth beyond current estimates to ensure parity with neighboring powers. Parliament had already provided over £3 million for aviation, and naval talks with Germany are set for mid month postponed for King George’s jubilee. Britain aims to align with France and Italy to avoid a weakening of allied confidence.

In Sparta Georgia on May 2 a planned Huey P. Long share our wealth speech by Gerald Smith ended when Sheriff R C Wiley blew a sound truck horn to drown out the talk. Wiley was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after posting bond. Mayor Harry Binion said Smith left town to avoid strife and the trial date is pending.
Dr. James Monroe Smith of Northeast Center Louisiana State University will be honored at a public reception Monday night at the college stadium. Lieut Governor James A. Noe and Mrs. Noe will join in receiving guests with Dean C C Colvert and Mrs. Colvert. The open, semi formal event aims to thank Smith for his service to education in the region.
Louisiana cotton farmers plan a May 7 meeting in Monroe to protest the abandonment of AAA processing taxes. Ben F. Young, chair of the state cotton control committee, expects about 2,000 farmers and outlines sending a Louisiana delegation to Washington with other southern states. Trains will carry delegates May 12 to May 14, with additional special trains from Texas and Mississippi.

Sixteen children are dead and 20 missing after a strong earthquake in the Kars district near Soviet Armenia. At least 50 are seriously injured as heavy damage spreads across the mountainous province of Turkey. Relief agencies rush to aid the stricken population.
Bruno Hauptmann’s counsel charged the jury in the Lindbergh baby murder case was not properly sequestered and faced undue outside influence. The defense sought permission to present testimony. a motion for oral argument was denied and the court said it would rule later today on briefs.

The Ouachita parish police jury met in a special session to seek permission from the state tax and bond board to borrow 20 000 dollars from local banks for current expenses while deferred taxes for 1934 are collected. ALREADY IN U. S. JAIL NEW ORLEANS May 2 State Representative Joseph Fisher a lieutenant of Senator Huey P Long's Louisiana political organization will not appeal his 18 month federal income tax sentence. Fisher's defense chief Hugh M Wilkinson said no appeal will be filed and the verdict and sentence will stand. He is to be transferred to the federal prison at Atlanta likely by Saturday.
A bipartisan coalition in the Senate Finance Committee rejected all amendments to extend the NRA recovery provisions to April 1. The panel voted 13 to 4 to report the resolution favorably, keeping price fixing and production controls limited to mineral and natural resource industries. Senator Black faced defeat on attempts to end price fixing.
