A blizzard raged in the northern plains for a second day as tornadoes and high winds swept through Minnesota. Sixteen people died, over 100 were injured, and damage ran into the millions as twisters struck Waseca and nearby towns, with dozens more hurt or left homeless.
Absentee voting wound up noon Saturday and was unusually slow with only four ballots cast in the two elections. One vote in the parish system election for seven mills, three in the city board election for 12 mills. Absentee voting ran April 19 to 29 noon, and Saturday voting was 8 a.m. to noon. Regular polling for the tax measures is set Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
A Louisiana Arkansas delegation asked Congress to fund Ouachita River basin projects with 26.27 million dollars, 4.15 million above budget, to keep construction on schedule. They testifed to House and planned Senate subcommittee hearings, citing needed work on navigation channels, dams, seawall planning, and river surveys.
Radarman 3rd Class Homer E Robison of the Navy is home on a 30 day leave visiting friends and his mother Mrs Vera W Robison in Monroe. He copies transfer from Atlantic Fleet Staff in Norfolk to Travis Air Force Base for transfer to USS Kitty Hawk. In London Islington an armored truck carrying gold bullion valued at 2.1 million pounds was hijacked by a gang. Three crewmen were overpowered, the vehicle found abandoned four miles away in Kentish Town with the crew bound. The 140 ingots belonged to N M Rothschild and Sons and the robbery bears the hallmarks of a carefully planned operation.
The House Commerce Committee approved a 47 day delay of a threatened nationwide rail strike by a 22 to 2 vote. The extension aims to give six shop unions and railroads more time to bargain wage disputes before a 12:01 a.m. Wednesday deadline.
Federal Home Loan Bank Board member Michael Greenbaum suggested a possible reduction in mortgage rates as part of policy to lower borrowing costs. He cautioned against predicting specific actions on rate ceilings for the July investment period and emphasized that lower mortgage rates depend on cheaper funds and lower saver dividends.

Loyola University New Orleans officials say a tapestry valued at 6000 dollars was stolen from a campus display over the weekend. Four tapestries were reported missing Saturday. a search recovered three disguised inside the building. A spokesman said the tapestries belong to a private Lafayette collector.

A tornado watch was issued for parts of northern Louisiana southeast Arkansas northwest Mississippi and eastern Texas from 12 noon to 6 pm Monday. Severe thunderstorms with hail and damaging winds were forecast with greatest risk near a line from southwest of Pine Bluff to east of Pine Bluff. The watch covers numerous Louisiana parishes including Caddo Bossier Webster Claiborne Bienville Lincoln Union Jackson Ouachita Morehouse West Carroll East Carroll Richland Caldwell Winn Red River De Soto Natchitoches and Sabine.
