A March dispatch from the Fifth Army describes the Anzio beachhead as mostly farms spread over the Pontine marshes. It notes Italian stone houses, green fields, and ongoing evacuation of civilians, with German shells nearby and soldiers using local farms for supply and maintenance tasks.

Chicago March 31 Agents opened two safety deposit boxes of the late William Haley Thompson thrice mayor of Chicago. Breen said the found assets totaled 1 466 250 in currency and stocks with an estimated 20 000 in securities. A will was not found though Breen suggested it may be in other boxes next week. Thompson died March 19 at 74 after three mayoral terms.
Newborns bring a total of five infants at Sloan hospital as Corporal Herbert Bachant and Mrs. Zarief welcome three girls and two more babies. The Zarief and Bachant families celebrate healthy deliveries with two mothers sharing a room and expecting more arrivals.
In a first degree murder trial, Wayne Lonergan faces possible verdicts including first or second degree murder, manslaughter in various degrees, or acquittal after Judge James Garrett Wallace charges a panel of 12 jurors. The case concerns the bludgeon slaying of Lonergan's heiress wife Patricia on October 24.
The Soviet Union and Japan signed a protocol in which Tokyo will surrender oil and coal leases on northern Sakhalin. Russia will supply 50 000 tons of oil annually for five years and pay Japan 5 000 000 rubles. Japan must hand over property of concessionaries. southern Sakhalin remains Japanese. Transfers begin within five days. the pact is effective immediately.
Ouachita parish surpasses the $80,000 Red Cross quota with $79,450.72 in receipts as March ends. Drive chairman Kellogg says donations may still be acknowledged and names of donors will be released by the News-Star and Morning World. Co chairmen Kellogg and Downing thank all supporters for a notably successful effort.
British forces surrender Tiddim forward base in the Chin hills 100 miles below Imphal as Gen Sir Claude Auchinleck reports to the Indian legislature. Mountbatten notes Japanese jungle parties probing eastern India and damaging the Imphal to Kohima road while British units advance north from Tiddim and south from Imphal.
President Roosevelt announced he would let the service vote bill become law without his signature though deeming it inadequate for service members overseas. He urged states to cooperate to make the measure effective and asked Congress to extend federal ballots to all uniformed personnel regardless of formal state ballot requests if state authorizations fail. He warned that if states reject the federal ballot the responsibility lies with them and Congress.
Stalin proclaims Ochakov captured on the Black Sea as Zhukov's first Ukrainian army advances across the Prut toward the Carpathians. Delatyn 15 miles north of the Hungarian border, Czernowitz fell, Lipcani taken, and heavy fighting reported near Myakovtsy and Kamianets Podolski.
Washington reports Republicans rush to select 420 national convention delegates in 17 states and one territory by May 1. Democrats tally 270 delegates in eight states with May 1 deadlines. James Riley Gillihan 46, a Lansing war plant inspector, surrendered after saying I have just killed a woman. Margaret McAmber 23 died from skull wounds, Gillihan had bought a hatchet yesterday and planned to kill her and then commit suicide but failed. He claimed they were once sweethearts and that he married her mother Ludma McAmber 41.
London reports a massive raid on Nuernberg and other Reich targets with the loss of what may exceed 96 heavy bombers. The operation marked one of the largest bomber assaults of March and followed Allied attacks on Sofia and other targets from Mediterranean bases.
Allied reporters say German troops moved into two positions on Monastery hill evacuated days earlier by Indian and New Zealand forces. German attacks inside Cassino were reported as air operations overshadowed ground actions. On the Anzio front 65 Allied casualties followed German air raids on a hospital area.
