In Miami, John C. Crouch and his son Edward Emory, 13, died in a canal incident during a family birthday celebration. Crouch, 43, jumped in to help after Edward fell from a bridge while freeing a snagged line. both disappeared beneath the water as Crouch failed to swim. The event also left behind wife and three other children, with a prior death of Virginia, 5, two years earlier.
Henry Picard, 27, from Charleston, shot 68 to move two strokes ahead after 36 holes of the North and South Open in Pinehurst North Carolina. His 69-68-137 led over Bull Mehlhorn and Mortie Dutra, with several pros and amateurs grouped behind as the field contends for $4,000 in cash and silver plates.
Marion Miley of Lexington wins the qualifying round at the Augusta women's invitation golf tournament with a score of 83 five over par. Dorothy Richards and Mrs. Charles Harbaugh trail by four strokes, while Isabel Ogilvie and W Ferris follow with 88 and 89 respectively.
