UPI dispatch from Saigon reports 38 American servicemen killed and 92 wounded last week, lowest U.S. casualties this year. Names of 30 dead and 50 wounded from a Friday rocket attack await notification. Overall, 45,183 Americans killed in action in Vietnam to date with 299,434 wounded since 1961.
A fierce storm system swept northeastern Oklahoma with 80 mph winds, heavy hail and driving rain causing extensive damage. Dozens of mobile homes overturned, power outages affected about 40 000 residents, and emergency crews labored through the night to restore lines while injuries remained comparatively few. Hospitals treated 43 people as authorities mapped the storm's 125 mile swath from Tulsa to central Oklahoma.
Joseph Moriarty a former Hudson County numbers boss was kidnapped in Jersey City and tortured with a blowtorch and beaten before escaping handcuffed through woods to a highway. He was treated for severe burns and bruises and later released. Investigators say the abductors remain at large as the $3.4 million stash remains tied up in legal disputes.

A fresh lava stream from Mt. Etna neared the northern edge of Fornazzo, Sicily, prompting evacuation of 20 homes along the village limits. The flow, seven yards deep, advanced toward the first houses and cut the north–south highway beside Europe’s tallest volcano.

The Nixon administration secured a major Senate victory by defeating an amendment to raise the draft pay increases to 2.7 billion dollars, in the two-year extension bill. Senator Richards Schweiker noted continued support for a one-year limit, while Senator Harold Hughes lamented absentees hurt the effort. The pay fight remains to be resolved by conferees after the Memorial Day recess.
A Riga court sentenced Arkady Shpilberg to four years Mikhail Shepshelovich two years Boris Maftser one year and Ruth Alexandro vich one year for spreading anti Soviet propaganda. The trials relate to a plot to hijack a Soviet plane to flee to Israel. Tass reports dismiss defense claims as groundless.
The National Weather Service reported the highest temperature for Wednesday outside Hawaii and Alaska reached 102 degrees at Buckeye Arizona. A low of 30 degrees was recorded at La Crosse Wisconsin.

Attorney General John Mitchell announced a reclassification move to curb production and use of amphetamines and methamphetamines citing their high abuse potential. The plan would shift them from Schedule II to Schedule I, impose quotas and nonrefillable prescriptions, with a public hearing set for June 30 if objections arise.
In Shreveport, Rep. Aghe Brown says Caddo Parish legislators urged Gov. Acker to grant clemency to H Lane Mitchell, former city commissioner who stole 86140 from the city. Mitchell, 76, received 16 years. sentence delayed due to hospitalization.
