London dispatch reports General Sir Bernard Montgomery stating the European war may endure a year or longer. He praised British ground forces for the upcoming invasion, urged full home-front cooperation, and vowed the army would be the best Britain has ever had. He urged courage and pledged to hazard all for victory.
President Roosevelt said at a news conference he would act on the soldier vote bill next week, likely midweek. He noted his upcoming message would signal a veto if that is the decision, but urged calling it a statement for safety.

Awardees include AP staff photographers John Rooney Harry Harris Anthony Camerano Murray Becker John Lindsay and Mathew Zimmerman with top prizes in sports pictures speed-light photography and children's feature picture.
London dispatch reports American heavy bombers Hit western Germany targets for the third day running while RAF strikes France. Fortresses and Liberators bombed Luftwaffe air fields near Paris and Lyon as Allied air forces total 5 000 to 6 000 planes in 36 hours. US air forces say 61 enemy aircraft were down, with two American planes lost.
Jared Young Sanders, 75, the last former Louisiana governor to serve a full term, died at Our Lady of the Lake hospital in Baton Rouge after a three year illness. A known road advocate and public servant, he held multiple state and federal offices and opposed Huey Long. He is survived by son J Sanders Jr, second wife Emma Dickinson, and sister Bessie M. Sanders.
