After a two year battle the Roosevelt administration secured a broad government reorganization bill. The measure, approved by the Senate 63 to 23, lets the president reorganize agencies by executive order with 60 day effect unless both houses disapprove. Debates on disapproval would be limited to 20 hours in each chamber.
Chairman Marriner S. Eccles of the Federal Reserve urged Congress to balance the budget without delay if it would restore prosperity. He cautioned that retrenchment could have disastrous results but said the majority’s view should be made effective. He noted both business leaders and Congress favor curbing government expenditures to spur private enterprise.
Baton Rouge March 23 announcement of the resignation of P T Eaton as secretary treasurer of the Louisiana Farm Bureau federation and the appointment of Milton C Tainter to succeed him. Eaton returns to the Illinois Central railroad agricultural department. Tainter has served as executive secretary for the Louisiana agricultural conservation commission and previously as Mansfield chamber of commerce manager.
A two-part dispatch reports a violent pursuit in Wyoming where Earl Durand, 26, trapped by a cliff in Clarks Fork Canyon, killed two posse members as eight sharpshooters press toward the crest of an 11 000 foot ridge. Sheriff Frank Blackburn notes the suspect is cornered near Cody Wyoming with the trail of violence ending in further gunfire.
Willie Williams, 28 years in Kilby prison, is sentenced to die for killing Birmingham detective J. T. Moser on January 31. Jefferson county jury verdict of guilty with death penalty recommendation follows Williams escape from Draper prison. Defense plans an appeal as charge disposition for Robert Oglesby remains undecided.
An official of Romania’s ministry of industry predicted increased commerce as a result of the new trade agreement with Germany signed yesterday. He and others stressed that Romania’s political independence remains intact and that Romanian interests are preserved despite speculation about German monopolistic exploitation of resources.
