Losses reach twenty million dollars as extensive fires devastate communities in the southern region. Officials report numerous blazes causing widespread damage and prompting evacuations and emergency responses. Local authorities vow investigations into causes and firefighting efforts continue.
Paris Texas sections face massive fire damage with 1500 to 2090 homes burned. Estimated losses reach 5 to 10 million dollars with several deaths and a missing woman. Fire crews under stop order as 800 locals patrol streets and relief funds gather 17000. Provisions and aid arrive for homeless and destitute residents.
A late fire in East Nashville swept 35 city blocks causing about 1.5 million dollars in damage. One death reported among residents. hundreds of families left homeless. Fire began from a thrown yarn ball in a vacant lot and spread with high winds, destroying 540 houses including the Little Sisters of the Poor home, Tulip Street Methodist Church, and the East Nashville post office. London dispatches report the French clinging to a portion of Hancourt Hill southeast of Malancourt where German footholds formed. No German infantry attacks occurred last night, bombardment near Verdun eased, while eastern Meuse bombardment persists signaling planned assaults. Petrograd notes Russians active in Galicia with gains along the Dvina near Dvinsk. Lloyds reports French bark Bougainville sunk with 23 crew saved and Norwegian bark Linfield sunk with 30 crew rescued.
All baseball players and others in Monroe are urged to meet Friday night in the council chamber at city hall to form a summer team and raise funds. Prominent citizens pledge support to build a team representing the city’s interests this coming season.
Dan Owens, Democratic nominee for ward 9 police jury, protested in Monroe today against the use of his name as a Progressive-Republican election officer. Owens, a Democrat, says he will vote for Democratic nominees and opposes Parker the Progressive-Republican candidate. He states his name was used without authorization and he was not consulted.
