In New Orleans on March 22 Senator Huey P. Long celebrated a court action that blocked a restraining order against lower Louisiana telephone rates. He travels to Columbia, S C, to address supporters while denouncing Roosevelt and Farley and urging mobilization against perceived foes.
Preliminary hearing for J. J. Payne and his wife Vivian in the Adelbert Ewing slaying was reset for 3 pm with Mayor J. R. Watts as hear judge. Payne and wife were detained after Ewing’s death on a beach near Pascagoula. Mrs Payne said she shot Ewing over her daughter's honor in a parked auto with 15 year old Gladys Kelley.
The state highway officer Arnold Keith Toombs, fatally injured in a West Monroe traffic crash, was laid to rest Friday at Peter's funeral chapel. Rev. L. T. Hastings and Rev. H. M. Bennett officiated as Company G of the 156th Infantry performed military rites at Riverview burial park. Pallbearers were fellow highway patrolmen M. J. Kavanaugh, B. Poimboeuff, J. G. Grant, R. W. Enzminger, P. V. David, T. B. Lucas, W. K. Evans Jr., Q. O. Muckelroy. Surviving relatives include his widow.
The senate commerce committee voted in Washington on March 22 to back a new bill granting the secretary of agriculture wide authority to regulate packing and advertising of foods drugs and cosmetics.
The house backed the Patman currency expansion bill by 207 to 204 to pay a $2 billion soldiers bonus with new money, blocking a substitute Vinson American Legion plan. The fight intensified as supporters tried to line up votes for the final showdown and a Tydings Andrews Cochran substitute was offered.

Louisiana State University announced acceptance of an invitation to play the University of Pittsburgh in a basketball game sponsored by American Legion post No 2 of Atlantic City. The LSU team, unbeaten in the Southeastern Conference, will meet Pitt on April 13 at Atlantic City and then resume practice.
Washington report says Donald R. Richberg assumed acting chairmanship of the NRA after a White House meeting with President Roosevelt and A F of L leaders. The reorganization expands the NRA board to seven with two labor and two industry members plus two professors. Observers note potential AFL support for the Wagner labor disputes bill if backed by the administration.
Public health workers from all sections of north Louisiana will attend a one day conference Saturday starting at 10 in the morning in the Central Grammar school auditorium. Miss Louise Strachan of New York director of child health education at the National Tuberculosis association will be the principal speaker. Others on the program include Dr. Charles R. An orchestra of thirty Louisiana School for the Blind students performed Thursday night at Ouachita Parish High School auditorium. Sponsored by Monroe Lions Club, the concert drew about 200 listeners and showcased solo piano and saxophone numbers. The program highlighted the students’ skill despite total blindness and included a craft display of items made by the school’s students in manual and domestic training.
Mrs Abigail Harding Lewis aged 59, sister of Warren G Harding, died at her Marion Ohio home. Funeral services will be held at the local church.
Marian King a 23 year old writer and narcotic addict stabbed her suitor John Irving Pierce a 23 year old Jackson Miss free lance writer with his own knife at the Nut Club in New Orleans French Quarter. Witnesses say Pierce handed the knife to Marian then drew it back and died minutes later.
Washington March 22. A bill to authorize the War Department to build six powerful air bases to defend the nation's frontiers was approved unanimously today by the House Military Committee after it was described as essential by high army officers. The full committee will take up the measure Tuesday.
At Oakland airport officials feared for the safety of a government robot plane after it failed to acknowledge radio calls for over an hour following a 7:06 am test flight from Oakland. By 8:30 am it sent a position 20 miles south of San Francisco and asked for the liner Mariposa, but offered no course details and did not respond to attempts to raise it.
Greenwood Mississippi reports that farmers halted levee dynamiting after militia rule, while the Tallahatchie River still eroded breaches and flooded about 25000 acres. Governor Conner ordered 300 guardsmen off duty, with withdrawal likely in 24 hours. In Arkansas the St Francis River broke near Lake City threatening Jonesboro as Clyde Crosnoe, 33, drowned near Marked Tree.
District Judge J D Womack dismissed Williams New Orleans sheriff bid to block Huey Long state administration from vetoing deputy appointments. The act requiring state bureau consent for deputies was upheld as within legislative power and deputies deemed state officers. Pettit of East Baton Rouge Parish shared the dispute but was not granted relief.
Washington reports Secretary Hull signals U S disapproval of Germany rearmament in violation of Versailles. Geneva notes the League council to meet in early April to hear France's appeal over Germany's conscript army. London foresees an iron wall approach if talks fail and Eden heads to Paris to ease French anger before meetings with Hitler.
