British liners Mauretania and Queen Mary slipped from New York, their destinations sealed. The pair, cloaked in camouflage, were listed as troop ships with unclear missions though rumors tied them to routes between Australia and the war effort.
Washington reports that American citizens in partitioned Poland lose direct diplomatic representation as the United States, under German pressure, withdraws all consular officials. State Department says it reserved rights while Berlin confirms the move applies to all foreign consulates. Evacuation leaves Poland under German authority and visa access restricted without governor general permits.
The New Orleans Bar Association adopted a resolution criticizing judges for political activity. It says judges should avoid any political participation except when running for judicial office and only then in relation to their campaign. The group argues such activity harms judicial ethics and public confidence.
Governor Earl K. Long appoints Augustus G. Williams foe of Huey P. Long as judge of the New Orleans civil district court to fill the unexpired term of Judge Hugh Cage who retired at age 80. Jay W. Taylor is named to succeed Leonard Spinks on the licensing board.
Howard D. Strother editor of the Eunice New Era was cleared yesterday of indictments. District Attorney L Aus tin Fontenot did not press the actions. Strother, a critic of the state administration, had faced libel and slander charges over remarks about Opelousas editor J N Langford. The state supreme court had recently remanded one case in which Strother was convicted of overcharging the police jury $6 for parish printing.
The appropriations committee says the National Labor Relations Board is overstaffed and cites administrative problems. It calls for a $45,600 annual saving by trimming economists Saposs division, and reduces labor board salaries by $57,000. A $10 million cut is proposed in old age assistance grants, part of a $954 million bill for several agencies.
E. Bynum Jr. 49 son of C. E. Bynum Sr. died in a Monroe clinic Thursday at 8 45 am from complications after an operation. A lifelong Monroe resident born May 16 1890 he worked as bill clerk and assistant buyer for Southern Grocer before retiring to manage family realty holdings. He also managed the Connor estate and Mary Goss Charities Inc.
Governor Earl K Long declares Friday Saturday and Sunday as Easter holidays for state employees. He plans to spend the days in New Orleans. Louisiana State University students began holidays yesterday and will return to classes Tuesday morning.
Baton Rouge memorial to Huey Long on a granite base rises beside the state capitol. A 35 foot statue cost $50,000 and honors the late senator born in Louisiana with scenes of his public works. The project follows the fall of Long’s political machine and a reform administration set to take office in May.
William G. Rankin former chairman of the state conservation commission is due to be arraigned in federal court at 2 p m. He faces a hot oil case after being confined in Caddo parish jail Shreveport and brought to Monroe. Rankin is under sentence to a federal prison at Atlanta for conspiracy to defraud the mails.
Louisiana WPA program administrator James H Crutcher says about five thousand jobs will be eliminated in April as part of an annual spring quota reduction. The cut targets overmanned, costly or underperforming projects and comes after a meeting with parish officials from St Landry Evangeline and Acadia.
The Senate pushed for a quick vote on the agriculture appropriation with a 212 million parity fund for corn wheat cotton rice and tobacco growers. Barkley said tax receipts lessen likelihood of new tax bills. The chamber also approved a wire tapping probe and kept labor board reform debates ongoing.
Richard Gallogly, a Georgia convict who fled to Texas last October, said he will ask his attorney to file habeas corpus in federal court seeking his freedom or to prevent his return to Georgia. He plans to rely on federal law prohibiting compelled pleas.

In New London a note from August H Heucke apologizes after charging Frank Maria two dollars for bumper damage in New York. F C Reiter caught an 88 pound salmon but his wife canned it before displaying prizes. In Phoenix a junior chamber court fined attendees in a khangaran event.
California Governor Olson doubts extradition of World War veteran Harry Blosdale, who escaped a Florida road camp five years ago. Olson said Blosdale may be rehabilitated and will decide after hearing from Florida Governor Cone. Florida officials deny mistreatment claims and defend camp conditions.
Richard King Hale grandson of Sarah Josepha Hale died in New Orleans. He once led Hibernia Insurance and later worked with Union Indemnity. Survived by widow two sons and two sisters, Susan Buell Hale and Mrs John Morris.
Paul Reynaud formally took the key of the French government as premier and foreign minister in a broadened wartime cabinet. He succeeds Daladier as premier. Daladier becomes defense minister in the new ministry alongside Camille Chautemps, Coane Campinelli, Laure ent Eyned, and Raoul Davry.
Paul Reynaud forms a new French cabinet backed by both right and left wings as Daladier retires after failing to secure a deputies majority. In London, British reports claim a German plane over the Shetlands and a raid on Suit island with heavy losses to an Allied convoy off Seopa. The RAF targets Baltic submarine bases while the German high command cites mixed results from raids.
Mrs Catherine Callahan lies in a Miami hospital suite after agreeing to medical care for a possible quintuplet birth. Dr Arthur Wood urged care despite her wish to join husband Emory, a furniture factory worker earning 15 dollars weekly. The Miami Herald owns the Callahan contract.
